..somehow came across this topic while talking to ~
Laura-Jayne21 a few days back, an interesting thought I might add.
Sight
Give me colours and contrast, details and focus. Having blurry vision is bad enough, yet alone being fully blind. You couldn’t read for yourself (there is Braille but it’s not like every text has been translated to it), you would be rather venerable wandering the streets, and you just couldn’t see the billions of amazing things that this world has to offer.
Explain This.. Hearing
Music and lyrics, words and sounds. Could you imagine if you couldn’t hear? You couldn’t listen to music, sing yet alone speak properly (if you were born without hearing), hear the calming sounds of nature or witness the ‘coos’ of a newborn.
I run off where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice, you must learn to stand up
For yourself, 'cause I can't always be around
He says, when you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
When you gonna make up your mind?
Tori Amos - Winter Taste
The pleasant combinations of ingredients can be so powerful. Same applies for nasty mix!! Back in the day this might have been a survival sense (if something tastes good, eat it, if not it’s probably going to kill you), but these days we’re a little more fussy and are dragged by our tongues towards tasty things (which are probably going to kill us!!)
delightful Dinner Smell
Cold and damp smells remind me of winter snow, and the invigorating sense of flying down slopes partially in control! The scent of wattle and other flowers in late winter to early spring really get me excited, dragging me out of my winter slump. The smell of hot dry sand and cool salty water in summer, and that aroma of fallen leaves slowly rotting in autumn. Again much like the sense of taste, but this one is still more of a survival sense as it can warn us of smoke, gas leak and other such fumes before we become overwhelmed by them.
All The Things You Do Touch
Rough texture of bark the smooth sensation of silk. Along with the temperature sense (which I’ll throw in here along with pain as they are usually considered part of it) touch can cause one of the strongest emotional feelings. Without touch we couldn’t know if we had a good hold on a pen, in fact we couldn’t even find the light switch in the middle of the night so we could write down that random thought that just popped into our head!
Get Your Paws Off My Car All the senses can evoke strong memories and emotions. But there are a few that are not necessary for normal human behaviour or survival. If I had no choice but to lose two senses, they would be taste followed by smell. My choice is based on practicality alone, as without these you can still be a fully functioning person, but of course by losing those would remove a link to many memories that are based on certain smells or flavours, not to mention their survival uses.
Of course I would rather not lose any of these senses, no one would, but there are people who don’t have every sense fully functioning and it severely restricts their life.
What two senses would you part with if you had no choice, and why?
