But hey, I AM still alive.

I have also crossed another milestome of Middle Aged Adulthood, last week I wrote a Tuition Deposit Check.

After also considering West Virginia Institute of Technology and City Tech on Brooklyn, it looks like Padawan Two is going to go to Buffalo State in the fall. They seem to have the strongest program, seem to place ( Read more... )

Agreed. I'm in Ontario, and I graduated in December 2010 with about $40k of debt. I have more debt than normal because, due to disability issues, I took a long time to finish my degree and had to pay very steep medical costs. The amounts people in the States are coping with are just insane.

I guess the only tiny silver lining young people in the U.S. have is that buying a house is much more affordable than here, at least in a lot of areas. There is a 1000-fold difference in housing prices between parts of Detroit and parts of Toronto. As in, I saw a listing for a two-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow in Detroit for $500, and I have seen listings for nearly identical Toronto houses that were $500k or more. House ownership is totally out of reach for young people in Toronto and Vancouver these days, and not easy even elsewhere in Canada. My city, Hamilton, is at the cheap end of the Southern Ontario range, and a decent (not too cramped, but not exceptionally nice in any way either) family home will still cost you $250k or so.

I hear you! After an MA for me and a PhD for hubby, we have an...alarming amount of debt, and we played vert conservatively on the loans. So to have jacka$$es like Santorum saying Oabama's a snob because he wants everyone to go to college? Argh!

We're still navigating Middle School with the Niblet, but we dread they day we start dealing with college. If we can both stay teaching at the school I teach at, and if we can keep teaching four classes a semester on average, he'll get enough hours free for a full time undergrad, if he's willing to go there. But that's a LOT of 'ifs.' We;ve actually considered moving abroad permanently, for that among many other reasons... It's madness.
