It was such a long time ago, when she had been so much younger and even more naïve.
But she remembers seeing the ocean for the first time. Her uncle held her close before allowing her to fly across the shore and skim her fingers over the water. The salty air surrounded her, comforted her. A wave rushed towards M’gann, splashing her face with shocking coldness. She giggled and waited for her sisters to join her. (They didn’t, too afraid of the foreign land still.) By the time her uncle retrieved her, M’gann was drenched and he was sighing.
She thought she would get to come back.

The memory floats by in her head every now and then. After all, HQ is located on a beach. It’s a little reminder that maybe life has circled around for her. But she does not sense that strange happiness she had the first time. M’gann wonders if it’s because she’s suddenly jaded, or maybe those joyful experiences only happen to young children.
M’gann throws a look to the beach, hugging herself. A figure emerges from the water and she already knows it’s Kaldur’ahm, having felt drifting thoughts from him earlier. Their eyes meet and her first instinct is to wave and smile but he’s already looking away and heading off to the base. M’gann lowers her gaze and hugs herself just a little tighter, longing for the delight she once had-the cool water against her face, the salty winds, the wet sand beneath her feet-M’gann desires this.
Or, something close.
--
“It will be winter soon,” he says one day, as they come back from a mission.
Instinctively, M’gann looks towards the ocean, shocked that she can feel the spray of the water touch her face softly. Breath caught in her throat, her eyes dart to him. He’s staring and M’gann knows he knows.
“Winter doesn’t bother me,” Superboy remarks and the feeling is gone. She’s smiling at the dark haired boy but she doesn’t miss the put off look Kaldur’ahm tries to cover.
--
M’gann inches towards the climbing waves upon the shore. It nearly reaches her feet before she allows herself to float above in the air.
Something is missing.
--
Late September. Her teammates discuss what’s happened in the year they’ve been together as Young Justice. M’gann gushes about their successes and Superboy’s involvement.
“Aqualad’s been a great leader,” Robin adds confidently and she grins, nodding.
“Kaldur’ahm is a wonderful leader,” she remarks and it’s a second before it dawns upon she had used his real name.
When he smiles, M’gann swears she feels some of that delight from so long ago-salt water aroma, soft and striking all at once.
--
Days later, when the autumn air becomes just a bit bitter and she’s feeling alone, M’gann makes her way along the mountainous beachfront. Hovering inches above the rocky surface, overlooking the ocean from the top of the cliffs, the Martian wanders. Waves crash violently against the rock walls, an odd comfort she finds in the sound.
It probably should have surprised her to see him standing there, gazing out to the horizon. But, somehow, she feels like this might be a world in between that she shares with him. It doesn’t feel like intruding, there’s no awkwardness; things fall into place. And, with a disappointing revelation, she realizes she empathizes with him than with Superboy. They are aliens amongst everyone else. Perhaps it’s always been that way.
M’gann tightly shuts her eyes and breathes in.
Pausing, she wonders why there’s a sudden flood of gratification. When she opens her eyes, their gazes lock and she’s grinning and he nods with a smile. When M’gann nears, he glances back to the ocean and she follows his line of sight to their common interest. She wishes she could touch the water again, to taste that feeling once more.
“M’gann,” his voice brings her back and she jumps, covering her shock with an uncomfortable laugh. He smiles for her and offers his hand. In that deep, soothing tone, “Join me?”
Oh, so that’s why. Her lips twitch into a tiny smile. It’s strange, because she knows exactly what he’s talking about. “Of course,” and with a second thought, “Kaldur’ahm.”
His eyes twinkle with a secret she’s sure she already recognizes. Something cool and refreshing tingles over her skin, dancing at her fingertips as she grasps his hand. Without any hesitance, they leap together.
--
When they hit the water, M’gann squeezes his hand just a little. Underneath, where everything is cool and dark, she smiles. It’s there-that feeling.
She feels the sea.
--
Resurfacing, she whispers his name and he brings her close, foreheads touching and she closes her eyes. Soaked and cold, M’gann releases a breathless laugh.
Quietly, “Thank you.”
For leading me back here.
