He had to go.
It strikes Ben harder than he could have imagined. It's not like he's has rose-colored glasses on but he hasn't exactly tried to look beyond what was really happening. Ignorance has played a big part in their relationship, Ben knows. Its harshness stabs him in the chest now that he's aware.
Wringing his hands, Ben strives to look her in the eye. It hurts. They had connected in such a way, he thought they could last. She's understood the Ben from before. But you're not the same guy now, Ben thinks to himself, bitterly.
However, she was a piece of him, a piece of his past that meant so much. Yet, that is what they were: the past. And he can't hold on any longer. There has to be a shift somewhere. He has to make the first move and when he tells her, Ben sees something dim in her eyes.
"You're breaking up with me," Serena states because they both know it's true. It's over. And maybe she's known that from the beginning too.
Nodding, almost lifelessly, Ben catches her gaze before setting his jaw and averting his eyes. He can't show how much this is tearing him apart. He's been stronger than this--he's had her ripped away from him once, he can bear it again, can't he?
She reaches for him, holds his cheek tenderly in her palm and kisses his lips. The way she does it feels like a wound, something painful. It's a goodbye and Ben closes his eyes and savors her touch one last time.
When Serena stands and begins to walk away, Ben wonders why she's always the one to leave first.
