Is tired...

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... huhwhuzzat!? ... I'm doing that a lot today. BB has a bad cough and I have a revival of the tummy bug and thus and therefore nights have been very broken. At least the grim and awful exhausted depression of Monday and Tuesday night has receded even though the back wall of the house seems to be leaking and the gas bill has arrived (Myles went into shock but I was actually expecting it to be worse so while it wasn't good news it was almost a relief to have concrete figures instead of nebulous worries) and BB is sick and the return of Sky TV to the household has revived old rivalries over who watches what between the kids I am actually feeling less miserable. Getting together with irishkate helped a lot. Also got to road test the new bath on Tues for more than a splash and dash shower off and verdict 'Me LIKE!'

For much of the week we have been flying round like dingbats trying to sort out a Montessori place for BB in September. HOWL! Part of the awfulness of Monday was hearing on the news that we had until Wed to sort this out or lose the government funding which would make it possible for us at all. It looks like we have it done now (made less painful by them giving everyone a week's extension because of the weather) and have a place in a very posh creche right near Mr Wol's work so can do the drop and collect without having to drive two kids in opposite directions in the morning. Will see how it works out. It felt very hard getting so adrenalized and focused on something that won't actually happen for another nine months - stop it!you dirty minded lot. Another good thing is that by going somewhere close to UCC there is a better chance of BB meeting other kids who will be heading to the same school in 2011 which is, I know, a huge advantage starting out.

Meanwhile Ireland continues to fall to bits. We became an international scandal and a hissing after BoingBoing picked up this nice, humane piece of reportage off the news http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyEMRoqyPkU although the issue of how we as a nation failed to deal with the ice is a bigger story (especially as i am certain that that poor bloke was a lowly RTE staffer). The country ran rather drastically out of salt and grit without salt does shit all good on ice so the response was to stop treating minor roads and footpaths so, massive rise in pedestrian injuries. Now it turns out that some counties got desperate and started spreading any old crap on the roads and there is concern in Kildare that having used, God knows why, neat Ammonia mixed with grit that they may have contaminated the groundwater and so the domestic supply. Plus the salt and ice combo has made the already legendary potholes on the roads much worse and there are thousands of households in the country with no water because we are losing on average 58% of our water supply in leaks in the mains system. Still, while it does all have a very third worldy feeling round here these days it could be a lot worse, we could be living in Haiti, or, like so many people, dying in Haiti. If you haven't given anything yet read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8460547.stm and bloody well make time.
