Banner with the title
I found this awesome reference with these 2 guys positioned just so, and I immediately thought it would be a great banner piece. Here Jensen might look a little possessive of his slave, Jared, but I see Jensen more as a protector. No, he doesn't like the slave laws, but he has to abide by them. So he painstakingly filters through people to find a match to fit his family. That's where Jared comes in and Jensen immediately wants to shelter him and make him a part of his family. He wants to do the best he can for Jared. And the font is hand made. I found this lovely script online and just had to use it.
"Welcome Home Jared"
Here is the image without the lettering on Jared's back. My author and I talked back and forth to come up with a collar for Jared and after looking at some quite fancy dog collars, I decided Jensen would spend the best money to fit Jared with a stylish, yet comfortable collar to show he is loved and wanted. I decided on a soft leather and added the braids and gold plate as embellishments. My author really liked it, so they went back to include it in the story. Collaboration at it's finest.
"I'm going to touch you Jared, but I'm not going to hurt you."
There are many scenes in the story where Jensen needed Jared to look at him when he was being addressed. Jensen very carefully stated what he was doing in words and always touched Jared's chin gently, without fail every single time. I just found this part so intimate, like a connection between the two, that I was just itching to draw. And I am really pleased with how it came out. I hope you all feel the same when you read the story.
My sketching process
So I think many of you have asked to see my drawing process eons ago and asked about pictures, but I never remember to stop and take a stinkin' picture. This time I remembered and sent my author updates, so I'd thought I'd share with you all. I started with a pretty rough sketch to lay down the basic lines. Then I slowly go back and refine each like and add shading like you see below.
You can see the reference outline I was using. (I saved it from Tumblr a long time ago, but the account isn't there anymore-sorry) Then I used references of Jensen to define the features of his face. I tried to look for recent ones as Jensen is older in the story, then I found references for Jared's head/hair, specifically his neck, to draw how his hair curled on the back of his neck. Then I found multiple pictures of dog collars for Jared's collar. Then I went into photoshop and fixed and enhanced things from there. And that's pretty much the gist of it. References are an amazing tool.
