You know, I have to give Hangover Insurance credit. As much as I feared my brain would be painfully wasted for 8 hours a day, I've actually been given quite the opportunity to read vast volumes of writing a day. Given that my "workload" really does amount to maybe, total, an hour (at most), I've taken to catching up my news, short stories and whatever I seem to stumbe across that day.
'Tis the season, clearly, to get all riled up over political news, slander and the like, and I am really no exception. This election has inspired and enraged me leagues more than 2004 (I mean, John Kerry is Melt Man... that's about it).
I've read millions of pages of commentary, op/eds, and straight articles on the NYT, Al Jazeera, CNN, and other mainstream media. But I feel I've sort of exhausted them for now, and have turned to alternative press for entertainment/enlightenment. I actually haven't read much of the liberal stuff since it's all a bit predictable to me. What I've found positively engrossing is the conservative alternative press.
HOLY SHIT!
This newfound obsession stemmed off of reading a NYT article this morning about Andy Martin, the psychotic democrat/republican/independent/antisemite who claimed as far back as 2004 that Barack Obama was a devout Muslim, etc etc. This guy ran for president twice; his first campaign in 1986 was titled, "Campaign to Exterminate Jew Power in America". He was also quoted, and affirmed the quote later on, that he felt "less and less sorry" that the Holocaust occured and "understood" why it happened. And now this man is vomiting up more falsehoods about Obama, it seems, as a final attempt to throw some more support on the McCain/Palin wagon. The worst part is, though, that there exists an actual percentage of Americans who buy into his bullshit and fear Obama as a fucking terrorist (did anyone see that woman on the televised McCain Q&A say into the microphone that she was afraid of Obama because he was an "Arab"? And then McCain didn't even say he wasn't Arab, but just replied with "he's a decent man"?).
So being the bitter-yet-curious liberal that I am, I Wikipedia'd this douchebag and found a list of publications that had cited his articles or claims, putting him in a positive light. The better part of my day thus far has been pilfering through and examining with utmost disgust the Web site freerepublic.com. I know, I know, it was inevitable that I would so much as glance at this site and become irate, but seriously?
The site has different forums focused on topics like breaking news, economy, and my personal favorite, RELIGION. I'm not sure if it's because I 1) am a reasonable, occasionally logical human being or 2) was never brought up to follow any form of organized religion, but I honestly cannot even begin to understand the mindset of the deeply religious American population, who think that their president, their leader of both national and worldly affairs, cannot be anything about a super-devout Christian.
What was sad to read was that seriously 85% of these article cite Obama as the Devil, Antichrist, and murderer because of fucking abortion. AHHHHHH. Posted were article upon article, pleading to the American public to consider that, if they even THINK of voting for a president who advocates for a woman's right to choose, that they are therefore going against the Christian faith and in some, criss-crossed way, they will go to Hell. Like, literally, they will go to Hell for voting for Obama. One reader posted a link to an article about that little American nun who's 106, living in Italy, and said after not voting for 52 years, felt compelled enough to vote for Obama in light of the US shitting the bed. And these readers attacked the shit out of this woman, saying she's in for a "rude awakening" when she dies and doesn't go to Heaven, and that McCain should have her tried and thrown into jail for trying to vote outside of the US (I know. It makes no sense).
Another inspiring commentary was on an article (
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2104526/posts)decribing how one Chicago neighborhood is considering building a school specifically for gay students who have been verbally and physically abused in the regular school system for their orientation. The school's curriculae would incorporate classes that spoke of tolerance, sexual education for everyone, and counseling for those who needed it. These are some of the comments on the article:
"are they going to be using tax money? should be building a school to reeducate these kids that being a homo is unhealthy, unnatural and not normal."
"Well if they have their own school they are away from normal kids! They will only pass their AIDS among themselves."
GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I'm not even going to get into the article I head where a preacher hears a message from God that he needs to tell Sarah Palin that she's been sent to save America (

I'm terrified... and yet, so thankful that I live in Massachusetts and have, to this day, absolutely no affliation with any religious organization.
"abstinence? these are queers! they will need bathroom monitors!"
