I walked up the crowded stair well and stepped out into a wall of blue and orange surrounding a large green rectangle. It was hot and humid and there was a large sign welcoming me to the Swamp. Yes, that's right I went to a Gator football game!
After going to 3 years of football games at CSUS with no one in the stands but the marching band, and seeing movies like Varsity Blues where entire towns go to a high school football game, I had to see what it was like. It was amazing! Probably the best time I've had at a football game. The only other game that comes close is one of the marching band tour, where the whole band yelled "oh shit" (in time with the Coors light sign) after the opposing team intercepted the ball on the 10 yard line and ran it to the other 10 yard line.
I went with a few of my fellow grad students and 85,000 of our closest friends (or at least that's what the T-shirt said). The whole stadium is standing on the edge of their seats and in orange and blue (except for a tiny section of yellow also known as Southern Mississippi fans). With every play on the field the whole stadium yelled with happiness or sorrow; mostly happiness we are the gators after all and were winning for most of the game. I can't follow football at all; all this first down, second down, then back to first down stuff makes no sense. All I know is that some how it all mattered and it was awesome to be a part of it. The stadium was so incredibly loud at every touchdown (I do know understand what that is), I couldn't hear my self think.
I think next year I’ll get season tickets. (Long story but as a student you can’t really buy tickets for a game you have to get them for the season, or hope to find a scalper at the game.)
