Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3
Chapter 4
After driving for a few minutes in companionable silence, Sam slowed down and turned off into a parking lot in front of a local park. He parked right in front of the park’s main office building and turned off the car.
“Sam, what are we doing here?” Kurt whispered, despite the absence of anyone else within shouting distance. Kurt didn’t like to think of himself as a scaredy cat but he wasn’t interested in walking through a dark forest for no reason. Luckily, it was a warm spring night, so at least they didn’t have to worry about freezing to death if they got lost.
“You’ll see. Just trust me, ok? Come on, this way.” And Kurt did trust Sam. Maybe it was stupid, maybe he would end up getting hurt (again), but there was something about Sam that made Kurt want to believe, not just in this, but in everything.
The pair walked behind the office and a little ways along a cleared path. Sam was leading with a flashlight and Kurt was close behind. Just about when Kurt was going to stop and demand an explanation before taking one more step forward, he saw some lights about one hundred yards in front of them.
Once they walked past the last of the trees, Kurt stopped dead in his tracks. In front of them was a pond, with a canoe tied up to a small dock that was otherwise surrounded by paddleboats. But surrounding the pond was a string of at least a hundred lights, giving the pond an otherworldly look to it. Sam hopped in the canoe and offered his hand to Kurt. “Come on, get in.”
Kurt accepted the help and got in more by muscle memory than anything. He was still in shock that Sam had done all this for him. Sam took an oar and pushed off from the dock, paddling them to the middle of the pond. Then he reached down to a little portable stereo at the bottom of the canoe and turned on a CD of classical music. (Moonlight Sonata was a bit cliché Kurt thought, but he certainly wasn’t going to point that out right now.)
“How on earth did you pull this off?” Kurt asked, still incredulous but trying to recover.
“Well, we moved to Lima in May, right after my old school let out and my parents made me get a summer job and I ended up working here. I realized a few months ago I still had the keys they gave me, but then I never got around to returning them. And I had this idea earlier today and I knew where they stored the lights for special occasions and here we are.” Sam paused for a moment, suddenly concerned that Kurt hadn’t really said anything about it yet. “So do you like it?”
“Sam, this is amazing. It’s breathtaking. But I don’t understand- Why?”
“Well I felt bad for jerking you around the past couple weeks and I wanted to do something nice for you. And you had said that you’d never really been on a date before, so I wanted to do something date-like and romantic, so you’d know how it felt. It’s the least you deserve.”
“This is definitely the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.”
That got a big grin out of Sam. “Well it’s the least I could do after what I’ve put you through the last couple weeks. I’m really sorry about everything.”
“It’s ok Sam; I know how difficult coming to terms with being gay can be. I’m just glad you’ve started accepting things.”
They talked for a while about less important things, school and glee club gossip and the like. Then, after a pause in the conversation, Sam moved forward and grabbed Kurt’s hand again. Sam took a deep breath and started talking.
“Listen, Kurt, I know I’m still all messed up and everything. And maybe this is a mistake, but I really like you. You’re like, the most amazing person I’ve ever met. So if you want, I’d really like us to be together, without any of the me running away or anything.” Sam’s hands were suddenly much clammier than they were before, and he wiped the free one on his pant leg. At least, Kurt hadn’t pulled his hand back yet, Sam thought.
Some tiny part in the back of Kurt’s head was telling him that maybe this wasn’t the best idea, that maybe they should wait until Sam was out and had gotten used to a new reality. But the much larger part of his brain could barely contain its excitement at the idea that ridiculously hot, ridiculously sweet boy wanted to date him.
“I think I’d like that very much,” Kurt replied. He moved towards Sam and kissed him, intending for it to be just a short peck, but Sam pulled at Kurt’s shirt and leaned forward to continue the kiss. Unfortunately, the boat was not the most comfortable place to make out in, so Kurt tried to shift to a better position in the canoe.
Kurt soon learned, though, that canoes are not known for their stability and it didn’t take long until both young lovers were in the pond beside an overturned canoe.

Sam dropped Kurt off a little after one with another kiss and a promise to meet at Kurt’s locker first thing tomorrow morning. Kurt opened the front door quietly; hopeful he could get down to his room without waking anyone. Unfortunately, Carol was sitting in the living room with a book and a reading lamp on, looking up at the opened front door in surprise.
“Kurt,” she said calmly, “I thought you were in your room sleeping since it’s one a.m. on a school night. Would you like to explain to me why you’re walking in the front door looking like you went swimming with your clothes on instead?”
And surprising even himself, Kurt did just that. Maybe he was still so giddy that the idea of telling anyone was irresistible, but he ended up telling Carol the whole story, from Sam’s dance lessons to the kiss to the Sam coming out to Kurt to the midnight canoe ride. It was a relief to finally tell someone; not even Blaine knew the whole story of what had happened.
“Well, first of all, you cannot be sneaking out of the house at midnight on a school night, especially now that you have a boyfriend,” Carol said. Kurt nodded repentantly. “But in the name of romance, I’ll let it slide just this once. You just better hope Burt doesn’t catch him outside your window or God help him.”
“No, I know, the next time he’s here he’ll be coming through the front door. Thank you Carol.”
“You’re welcome. Now you really need to head to bed so you’re not a zombie tomorrow.”
“Of course, goodnight.” Kurt headed towards the stairs but stopped at the entrance when he heard Carol’s voice call out again.”
“Hey Kurt,” Carol said as Kurt turned back towards her. “You said that Sam came out to you, does that mean he hasn’t come out to anyone else.”
“Yes, just me and his sister so far.”
“Have you two talked about this? Is he going to come out to everyone else?”
“Not yet, but I’m sure it will be fine. It might take him a little while since it’s so new, but I’m sure he will soon.”
“Ok, hon, just worrying, it’s a mom thing.” Kurt felt a mixture of emotions at Carol’s last comment, uncomfortable and sad and pleased all at the same time.
“Goodnight Carol.” Kurt said softly as he headed down towards what would end up being a restless sleep.
