Summary: Burt Hummel doesn't really like that blond haired kid but after this he realizes maybe he's not so bad.
When Burt first met the boy with the blond hair and abnormally large mouth that went by the name of Sam Evans it was as Finn’s video game buddy from football and Glee. He remembered the name from when Kurt had a duet project and realized it was the boy who had agreed to work on the project with his boy. Kurt was out with that kid Blaine but came back around 4 to make dinner and when he came into the living room to say hello he noticed the way the blond kid smiled and held out a fist for Kurt to bump his own against before going back to his game.
He kept a close eye on the kid who seemed to like to come around even more after Kurt had transferred to Dalton and seemed more interested in catching up with Kurt then playing video games with Finn. Burt wasn’t dumb he knew that this kid had it bad for Kurt the moon eyes he shot at his son whenever Kurt would tutor him for English didn’t go un-noticed by him. Of course at this point Kurt had just started dating Blaine a boy who was out and proud and who Burt approved off whole heartedly. But then one day a little more than a month after the relationship began it ended when Kurt came home and informed Burt of the new development.
Soon Burt began seeing the blond boy sitting with Kurt on the couch in the living room his son tucked into the boys side as they watched TV or just talked. He wasn’t so happy with this development seeing as how he knew that this kid had had a heterosexual past and could easily up and decide one day that he actually didn’t like boys. At least with Blaine Burt knew the kid wouldn’t break Kurt’s heart by deciding that he wasn’t actually gay and wanted back with Quinn Fabray. He ignored the fact that this was the same kid that had actually stood up for Kurt and gotten beaten up in the process all those months ago. All he could see was heartbreak in Kurt’s future and he didn’t like it one bit because he wanted to shield his son from that part of life as long as he could.
Plus the kid wasn’t as polite as Blaine was, sure he never called Burt anything but Sir or Mr. Hummel but he had a mouth. He had heard it on a few occasions the boy throwing out subtle sexual innuendo’s about his son and he knew that the kid liked to use the word fuck. Although he figured it was better than Kurt dating the Mohawk kid who had started to find his way into Burt’s house because it seemed Finn had finally decided to forgive the kid for what Kurt referred to as Babygate. The biggest strike against the kid most definitely came when his son asked if he and blond kid could talk to him shortly before blond kid was set to go to New York for Nationals with the rest of New Directions in April.
Sitting across from his son and blond kid he noticed how scared his son looked a face he hadn’t seen since Kurt had come out to him and Burt knew he knew right away what Kurt was going to say. When Kurt called him Daddy and followed that word up with the words I’m and pregnant oh Burt wanted to kill the blond kid. He stared ahead as Kurt babbled an explanation about how they were always careful and he was so sorry and he understood if Burt wanted to kick him out like Quinn’s parents did. Burt couldn’t hate Kurt he could never hate his baby boy the one thing he had left of his beautiful Katherine. So he took out his silent hate on the blond boy who knocked up his baby boy while calming informing Kurt that he wasn’t going to kick him out. Of course he told his son he was disappointed in him but he let Kurt know that he still loved him and he’d be there for them. And if when Kurt went to go get some water Burt threatened the blond kid that wasn’t something Burt would ever tell.
Now here he was six months later with the blond kid living under his roof after said kid’s own parents kicked him out and a pregnant teenage son. It was a typical October afternoon and he decided to leave work early to plan a surprise dinner for Carole because she’d been so busy lately. When he pulled into the driveway he noticed his son’s Navigator in the driveway and was upset to find out Kurt was skipping school. The door to his son’s room was open and Burt walked onto the top step but stopped when he heard a soft voice. Looking down he saw Sam-who he had just started referring to in his head with his given name-and Kurt on his son’s bed. Except Kurt was sleeping on his back and Sam was awake his head next to Kurt’s exposed baby bump talking to it.
“…and your Papa well he’d probably think I was crazy talking to you so that’s why I do it when he’s asleep. He’s amazing you’re Papa, the most amazing boy I’ve ever met in my life; he lights up a room with his smile and has the voice of an angel. Plus he’s beautiful I never understood why someone would call a boy beautiful until I met him. While it sucks that he goes to a different school him transferring was what made me realize how much he means to me. Ya know he was so scared to tell me about you, but he didn’t have to be, because I love him and you. You’re not even here yet and I love you so much my little Katherine.” Burt’s heart swells when he hears all of this especially when he hears Sam call the little girl inside his son’s stomach Katherine. He didn’t know they had decided on a name yet after finding out the baby was a girl a month ago but he was happy they had.
“Did you know that I’m the one that named you? Papa didn’t know what to name you and I thought that idea was crazy because of course we’d name you after your Grandma Katherine. We can’t wait for you to be with us so we can tell everyone your name especially your Grandpa Burt.” Burt listens as the boy stops for a moment just caressing the exposed skin and smiling when he assumes the baby inside-no Katherine- kicks at his hand as he does so.
“Now your Grandpa Burt…he’s the greatest Dad ever not many Dad’s accept this kind of a situation like he has. He loves your Papa the way a parent should the way your Papa and I already love you. If I’m half a good Dad to you as he is to your Papa then I’ll think I’ve done a pretty awesome job. Here’s the other thing baby girl, your Grandpa he doesn’t like me very much I know that. I understand why, I got his baby boy pregnant and well I’ve only dated girls before your Papa so I think he’s scared I’ll realize that I don’t want to be gay anymore. But don’t worry baby girl I’m sure he’ll come around someday…even if that day is twenty years from now.” After that Burt decides to leave Sam to have some time with his baby girl and as he turns to go back up the stairs he realizes maybe the blond kids not so bad after all.
