The Antikythera mechanism has been in the news recently, having been studied, reconstructed, and finally understood as a work of engineering 1700 years ahead of its time.

I hadn't consciously remembered Heron of Alexandria, but his Formula is part of the high school geometry canon.

This is a neat bit of alternate history speculating on what might have happened had the two met in antiquity. As with much of this kind of work, the worldbuilding is stronger than the story...
