Yesterday, while Yaco was walking me around the neighborhood, I discovered a little shop located in a backstreet between the German Institute of Archeology and the Embassy of Russia. In bright red and blue neon letters I read "Taste of America".
So now I'm trying out every product that they have, and trying to convince the owner to order Peanut Butter M&M's.
This weekend was dedicated to Briar's Soda (12 OZ!!! instead of 20 lousy centiliters!) ; I've already tried Black Cherry and Grape, and though I was a bit disappointed when my tongue and lips didn't turn scarlet or royal purple, the experience was pretty satisfactory. I also loved the fact that you could return the bottles -and get paid for it! This were old glass bottles, and after a bit of exploration I could find the sewing on the side. Another extra was the nice seashell-like sound that resonated when I blowed some air inside. It was deeper than that of Coke glass bottles.
I also bought a bottle of maple syrup and a pack of cinnamon-mint Orbit chewing gum. Why isn't cinnamon popular as a gum flavor in continental Europe? It's delicious!
There were also racks of funny-looking, colorful condiments and Hershey's chocolate chips everywhere. But my quest lead me to the lower racks, where they had three kinds of peanut butter!
Now, my quest to find a decent, cheap peanut butter in Spain started two years ago. I love to eat it for breakfast with strawberry jam, or to combine it in different kinds of desserts -any recipe would be very much apreciated. So far, the only brand I trusted was Sun-Pac, sold at 5! Euros! in Fass, a German grocery shop around the corner. Last week I scoped the underground (and very black) Chinese supermarket at Plaza de España, where among nori seaweed and coconut-mango juice cans they had Peter Pan peanut butter. With a highly suspicious sell-by-date stamp. So to have three more brands to try -cheaper, and with Crunchy variations!- is a heavenly perspective.
This discovery, however, has had a side effect. The future intake of calories calls for drastic measures in the battle against couch-potatoness, so I'm joining a gym tomorrow.
