Author’s Notes: Written for a prompt at spnkinkmeme, which asked for Dean being an Alpha and raised as an Omega by John.
The story takes place in an a/b/o universe and mostly follows canon.
This is not a love conquers all story even though it has the elements of love and affection in it.
This is not a happy story despite occasional fluffiness.
This is not a story of a hero, its not a story of a savior.
Its a story of an Omega.
Its a story of an Alpha.
Its the story of one Dean Winchester.
Dean Winchester is probably the prettiest omega you have ever seen.
Every story has a start, as everything has to start somewhere. For all intent and purposes this story starts on a fateful day, when a fire destroys the Winchester family.
But that's not when Dean remembers it starting. To him it starts with Sam, Sammy. To him it ends with Sam.
Dean is nearly four, he likes watching batman on TV, he likes going outside and playing in the dirt. He likes to play with his planes, likes to sit in his mother's lap listening to her voice.
One day she calls him, excited with a smile on her face. He sits beside her, with the faint curiosity of a child.
"You are going to have a little brother, Deano" She says, and Dean is terrified.
"A brother like Lily has? " He enquires. Lily is their neighbor's daughter, she is a couple of years older than Dean. Dean plays with her occasionally, and she has a brother. Her brother always cries, doesn't do anything and quiet frankly Dean doesn't know what's so great about having a brother. Also he thinks he has to share his toys with his brother. That's unacceptable.
"Yes. But he wont be like Lily's brother. He will be special" She continues taking his palm in her hand.
"Do you want to touch him, baby?" She puts his hand on her tummy, which is kind of bigger than usual. She adjusts his hand until he gets the rhythm going inside.
"That is your brother, Dean" She says seeing the expression on his face.
Dean's brother is kind of funny, Dean thinks. That's the first thought he had about his brother.
His father comes in, sees what Dean is doing and smiles at them.
"Your mother is right, kiddo" he says, "That's your brother and you are going to be a good big brother and take care of him when he is here"
Dean likes taking care of things. It makes him feel like he is a big boy.
"Yes, Sir" He answers, unintentionally accepting a responsibility for which he would sacrifice everything. A covenant has been signed and Dean is unaware of this, for the moment.
Time passes and soon Mary goes into labor. Dean is sort of excited to meet his brother. He remembers his father's words. A little brother for him to play and take care of, Like Daddy and Mommy takes care of Dean.
The next day Mary comes home with a bundle in her arms. Dean looks at it expectantly. The bundle is placed in the nursery Dean helped to decorate.
Dean goes inside, following Mary. There he sees his brother for the first time.
"He is stupid looking" Dean says the first thing that comes to his mind.
The baby is small, red and sleeping. He looks stupid.
"No Dean, He is beautiful. Wait till he opens his eyes" Mary says laughing at the petulant tone of Dean's voice.
Dean touches baby's arm. Not baby, he reminds himself. Its Sam. His brother's name is Sam short for Samuel. Dad had told him this before.
"Hi, Sam " He says awkwardly, still trying to get a reaction from baby.
Then Sam opens his eyes. They are big and kind of blue. He takes a look around him, then looks at Dean. He starts crying, like he found something unacceptable in Dean's face. Dean is startled by the sudden turn of events, by this dismissal.
Mary laughs again and says " Well, someone is sure hungry"
That's how first encounter ends.
Dean is not sure what changed, but at that moment the idea of a brother turns into reality. From that moment, Dean's happy family drawings will include a little brother, they will include a Sammy, just like his life.
There are more encounters like the first one.
Some ends happily, with Sam looking at him, smiling at him, trying to touch him. Some end with Sammy crying at him. But Dean is not going to back down now, he is nothing if not persistent. Having a kid brother is way cool than he first assumed.
Dean starts pre-school. For a while everything is going good.
Then the fire happens.
Its a special day, Sammy turned six month old on that day. They had a celebration, Mary cooked pie and Dean loves eating pie. He helped setting table and then they all had a fantastic meal. After food Dean felt sleepy. He went to his room for sleeping.
Next thing he knows is that his father calling him in a frantic voice. He gives Sammy to Dean to hold, asks him to get out of the house immediately. Its so hot everywhere, like something is burning. Mom is nowhere to be seen. Dean remembers taking care of Sammy and carries him out, purposefully trying not to think about anything else. He has Sam in his hands, he has to obey his father and save Sam. Like a mantra it rings in his head.
He sits outside with the baby in his hands.
His father comes out of the house, and for a moment Dean doesn't recognize him. He is pale, ashen like he is dying. He is crying tears and his hands are trembling.
"We need to leave now, Dean" He says in a voice which sounds alien to Dean.
They get into the car, Dean sitting in the backseat, clutching the blanket in his hand.
Its a blur in Dean's head, after that. They go to places, talk to people, Sammy cries, Dad looks like he is going to cry.
Dean learns the truth then. His mom is dead. She is never coming back.
His Dad starts drinking.
Dean stops talking for a few months.
John Winchester was never accused of being a moral man.
Oh, don't mistake him, he was a good man. But that was before the war, before his wife's death.
Something inside him died with her.
His wife was his second chance for salvation, a chance for him to remember that he could forget the violence of the war, a chance for him to lead a happy normal life. For a brief period of time(too brief) he had everything. He had a family, he had children and he had dreams.
Then he got reacquainted with reality rather rudely.
Monsters are real. Demons are real. Supernatural exists. One of them took John's life from him, took John's peace from him, took John's dreams from him. Nothing is safe, there is no white flag here, no red cross. Its an eternal war where soldiers fight till they die.
John is an excellent soldier. For a while he thought he had left that particular part of himself behind, but that's not true. He is an excellent soldier and the world is a war zone. He has to fight, he has to take revenge, he has to keep his children safe. In that order.
He looks at himself in the mirror. He looks like a man possessed. Like a man on a mission from God.
Its close enough to truth.
Its already six months now. Six months since Mary died, six months since John is running around like a convict with a death sentence. Six months since Dean stopped talking.
Dean reminds him of the trauma victims he had to deal in war. But this is war, and John cant afford that. John is the commander here and Dean has to step up, to assume the position of second in command. He is still a child, John is aware of this. But normal rules don't apply here.
Dean takes care of Sam. He even sleeps with the baby, inside the crib. He consoles Sam when he is crying, plays with the baby.John suspects that Dean talks to Sam, when no one is around. But that's okay. He is sure that Dean will come around in a few days. John's priorities lie elsewhere at the moment.
There was a guy in Sam's nursery. Not a guy, a monster. A monster who killed Mary, and put something in Sam's mouth. He has to find out who the monster was, and why he killed Mary. His duties as a father are important but this is urgent. He would prefer negligence over being sheep.
John tries to adjust to the new lifestyle he chose to lead. Travelling all over the country, searching for hunters, searching for clues. He takes hunts whenever its possible. Partly because he likes to see the families intact, but mostly its like an exercise. Like a practice match for the main event. If he knows how to deal with these supernatural creatures then that will help in long run. That will help to track the Mary's killer.
Given his new occupation, its no wonder that he forgot the testing day.
Its mandatory. Everyone gets tested on their fifth birthday. Most of the population is beta, normal humans with no extra genes. A very small portion tests out as Alphas and Omegas. Anomalies in the gene pool. The government does this cause these outliers need extra care, extra security. It tracks the number of Alpha/Omegas for more practical purposes.
John is staying in a motel with children. He looks outside the window and sees a mother taking a girl to the test center. The posters outside that he somehow missed to notice now takes his attention. He remembers that Dean is five now, he has to be tested. Its a chore and John is sure that Dean would turn out beta, just like him and Mary. But its a necessary evil, all the schools ask for test results and Dean is supposed to start school in a year.
John decides that there is no better time than present. The center is right in front of motel. Sam is sleeping now, he could take Dean to test center and get it done in a few minutes. He goes inside and finds Dean, sitting near Sam's crib. He tells Dean that there is something that needs to be done and Dean has to come now.
Dean, as obedient as ever comes with him. He takes Dean to the test center, impatient when they make him wait for a few minutes. The nurse comes, smiles at Dean and takes a little blood for testing. She assures John that results will be available in a few minutes. John waits in the lobby along with Dean.
A few minutes turn into half an hour and still the nurse hasn't returned. John is impatient and Dean is clearly thinking of going back, to Sammy. Then she comes back with an unreadable expression on her face.
"Sir, you need to come and meet Doctor" She says and John gets the first inkling of something being wrong.
He tells Dean to sit there, and goes with her. She shows him doctor's office and he goes inside.
The doctor tells result of the test.
Dean is an Alpha.
Dean is an Alpha.
John stares at the report in his hand, refusing to comprehend it. This would change a lot of things.
Doctor is continuing on topic. Explaining that Dean needs to be registered in system. There will be a second test, just for confirmation. Then the records will be updated in the system.
John tunes him out.
"We will be conducting a second test today. The results of which will come back next week. After that we will register him with the government"
Doctor says.
"That's okay, we will be back later"
John excuses himself. Doctor is reluctant to let them go, so John gives him one of the numerous fake IDs. He leaves with the promise of coming back later.
John hasn't encountered any alphas in his life. He isn't an authority in this subject.
Alphas are generally difficult to handle, too hot headed and too selfish. They don't listen to anyone, mostly get into fights.
Its difficult to raise an Alpha child if there is no Alpha to supervise them, if there is no Omega to love them.
The Alphas raised by beta parents mostly tend to be violent, and slightly unbalanced.
That's why government interferes in these cases. Alphas and Omegas are by definition a minority and don't have same rights as betas. Government could take them from the parents and put in facilities exclusively built for them.
Alphas mate for life as well. They only mate with Omegas and the offspring of an Alpha/Omega couple are said to be having exceptional abilities. That's one of the reasons why government keeps track of them. That's the official story. That's what doctor told John.
John has to look into this. He can dig deeper to get the real one.
John has to think about his priorities here.
He cant afford to have Dean as an Alpha. A beta would be ideal. Even an Omega would be passable. But he cant have Dean as an Alpha cause that would interfere with his quest. He doesn't have the time and effort it takes for rising an Alpha. He thought he could utilize Dean's potential, for the quest and for raising Sam. But this puts a fullstop to his plans.
He would have to stay in a place. Not stay, he corrects himself, to live in a place. He cant trust his Alpha son to take responsibility, to take care of Sam, not at his early years. Later Dean might be able to, but not now.
But John doesn't trust anyone else as well. He is still new to the hunting world, still new to the whole supernatural crap out there. He had met a couple of hunters along the way, but they are in no way friends. Most hunters don't trust anyone. What's the point when the person talking to you very well could have been manipulated. After seeing all the dark and twisted stuff in the world they start to see the shadows everywhere, starts to see the ghosts even when there are none.
So John is essentially at a dead end.
He can stop and try raising his children as normal. But that means he has to abandon searching for the thing that killed Mary.
Then there is Sam.
When did he stop thinking Sam as Sammy, John wonders. But its Sam now. Mary sacrificed herself while saving Sam. He remembers seeing her on the ceiling, her cries still reverberating in his ears. He knows that the thing that killed her wants Sam. For whatever reason, probably to kill, probably for something else. If he cant save Sam then Mary's sacrifice will be useless. By being a sitting duck, he might as well deliver Sam to the evil.
Its like a match he cant win, like odds are never in his favor.
Dean is looking at him, trying to say something.
"What, Dean?" He asks.
Dean speaks, that itself is a surprise.
"Sammy, He might be hungry"
Why couldn't Dean be a beta, John thinks. Its irrational, he knows that Dean couldn't have chosen anything, but he still feels the resentment. That would've solved his problems. He even has the compassion and love associated with an Omega. Anything would have been better than an Alpha.
Then it comes to him, like in a flash. A solution with such a simple beauty that John admonishes himself for not thinking of it sooner.
There are rumors about Alphas and Omegas. Rumors of parents who tried to mask their children to pass as a beta, using some illegal drugs for the purpose. Its mostly a caution story government sprouts, like a guide to how not to raise your children. But its there, and at any scale John thinks most of the things government tells are lies anyway. It never told him monsters exist and apparently they do.
But he could look into this. If somehow he can turn Dean into a beta then it would be ideal for all parties involved.
A voice inside him that rarely spoke these days objects to it. Dean is his son, and messing with biology never turned good for anyone.
He crushes that voice. Dean is his son but he is much more than that. He is his asset, his weapon, his soldier in the coming war. So he has to think like a general in the middle of battle, accessing the value of his subjects. The rules of peace time doesn't apply in war. Being a father comes second to that.
Also he is doing this for Dean's own good. Dean loves them, loves Sammy and he would gladly agree to it, John is sure.
"We will go back now, You can feed him then" John says.
"Yes, Sir" Dean replies.
Like a man on a mission, John goes to motel and starts searching for ways to change his son.
Its not easy.
Its not easy and there is way too much biology involved, more than John ever suspected and wanted to know.
John doesn't like to do research. He is good in hands to hand combat, good in searching for clues, good in seeing patterns in random data. But he isn't that great in reading books and figuring out things. Its more like it doesn't interest him, being passive.
He collected information from various sources, hacked the data from government databases, questioned a couple of parties, learned things they never bothered to teach in schools.
Basically it boils down to this. Alpha's and Omegas' have a type of genetic anomaly. Normal people have two sex chromosomes in them, X and Y. They essentially decide the sex of a person. XX for girl and XY for boy. John is aware of this. Alphas and Omegas have three sex chromosomes instead of two. The third one is called Z chromosome. An Alpha has XYZ combination whereas an Omega has XXZ combination.
They are essentially a subspecies. They cant have children with betas.
They are also very rare.
That means there are less samples to test and analyze, less data to understand how they work. Scientists haven't figured out why it exists and what it does. From what John understands it was a recent discovery, the existence of it, so still they are trying to decode the mystery. Before they were keeping the records just for the sake of maintaining decorum, but now there is real interest in it. Now its mandatory to register your children, mandatory for future use.
There are some other interesting tidbits there. Like how Omegas will go into heat twice a year when they hit their puberty. Like how Alphas are territorial and protective of their subjects. Like how an Alpha is almost too much to handle, like how they don't listen to authority, how they don't listen to betas. Books assure him that its a side effect of mysterious Z chromosome, paired with Y producing too much testosterone. Tell him that it will disappear once Alphas mature, once they settle down. But till then its a hassle to handle.
John considers this.
There is no magic pill to change them into betas. At least not now. It might be possible in future, when the mystery is solved, when the inner workings of their biology is studied and understood. But for now its not possible.
He tries not to be discouraged by this. Its already unfair that he has to suffer with the knowledge of supernatural, with the burden of hunting it, his reality irreversibly damaged by it. This adds up to that. Another challenge, another hurdle in his path.
He briefly considers looking into other ways, consider taking help from other realm, considers using supernatural means. Bur its too repulsive for him, it feels too much like sleeping with enemy, feels like taking the help of the very thing he sworn to destroy.
So he changes his tactic.
After a week he gets lucky. He tracks a potential Alpha-Omega pair. Turns out they are legit and they are helpful. He poses as a researcher, for some obscure research firm and they believe him. They tell him about suppressants.
Rick, that's the name of Alpha had a difficult childhood. His parents were surprised and clueless about what to do with him. But they had contacts, had influence and they got him suppressants, and he had taken them for a few months. It was not a pleasant experience. He had felt like shit, always moody and depressed. But he had stopped showing any violent behavior during those months.
Its an idea, worth exploring.
He could get those pills for Dean as well, for a short period of time, just till John hunts the thing that killed Mary. After all Rick had taken them and Rick is healthy now, no problem with him. Dean would be okay too.
He gets the address of the firm that produces the pills from Rick. Its illegal, of course, to sell them or to consume them, but that doesn't stop John. He leaves them with a possibility of a solution for his problem.
Its easy to get the drugs from the company, John poses as an authority figure, and they are scared that they will be exposed. He makes a deal with them, indefinite supply for keeping his silence. They agree and John is a happy man.
"Any side effects?" John asks, eager to get that out of his system.
"Not in short term. But if used for a long time then it has the potential to change them to Omega" Doctor continues, "Its mostly Omega hormones that are being pumped in, to neutralize the Alpha ones. So we think prolonged use might result in a gender change"
That's a bit problematic, but John isn't planning to use them for that long.
He comes back to the motel, they are staying. Its a small one, one of those that rents on a hourly basis. Dean is sitting on the bed, Sam sleeping with his head on Dean's lap.
He calls Dean.
"You have to take these pills everyday" He says handing over the box.
"You want to take care of Sammy, don't you Dean. Make sure that you never miss taking them. They will help you to be strong enough to take care of him"
He adds and wonders when he turned to a drill sergeant.
"Yes, Sir" Dean's reply is monosyllabic, but its clear.
John has no reason to doubt that Dean will disobey a direct order. Now with the drugs he will never be able to.
