Meme time! Since I haven't been updating my journal with these in awhile, it's about time.

1.) What was the first anime you ever saw, and how do you think it stands up today?
My brother swears on his life that it was Dragon Ball Z, and he was the one that showed me Sailor Moon and forced me to watch it instead of bugging him during his favorite show. LIES.
Um. Anyways, enough of my personal life. On to Sailor Moon! It was my first *official* anime; I recognized it as anime, something I haven't been familiar with before, and I was immediately curious about it. I still think it holds up today. Obviously it falls short of the new shiny stuff, but its influence on anime fans can't be denied, and I'm not sure if any other anime holds that same sentimentality Sailor Moon tends to give its fans.
And as a side note, it really annoys me when anime fans who claim to be feminist bash on Sailor Moon and Usagi, or drawing unfair comparisons to other shows with female leads. I get that it isn't perfect, considering how often Tuxedo Mask had to come and help Sailor Moon gather the courage to fight off her enemies, but...well, speaking as someone who does see herself as a feminist, the show really meant a lot to nine-year-old me, and I hate it when other people dismiss its influence on girls and young women and never seem to do the same with other shows that dismiss female characters altogether. That, and even if you dislike the anime, the manga series itself is miles better in its own place, and I wish haters would take the time to read the manga first before dismissing Sailor Moon entirely.
2.) What would like to do as a profession?
I would like to do something with an English degee, but that plan is on the back burner, for now. The economy is getting better, but it's a slow progress, and I can't wait on my field to imrpove forever. Right now I'm wondering if I should seek a career working with animals instead. It's still a work in process. I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing right now.
3.) Are there any recently released TV shows that have caught your interest?
Not really. I don't watch a show unless someone recommends it, or I accidentally discover it years after the release. I tried to get into Community, but I lost interest quickly. How I Met Your Mother is another, but that came out in 2005, I think, so it doesn't really count anymore.
4.) Which do you prefer, cats or dogs?
I love both, but if I had to pick, it's definitely cats. I like dogs, but I connect easier with cats, and I can handle them well enough.
5.) Who are some of your favourite writers?
Jeanette Winterson is a ridiculously good writer. Her work definitely shined with Written On The Body; literally every page has something touching to share.
Amy Tan is also one of my favorites; I love how she focuses on mother/daughter (and sister) relationships and brings something genuine to her stories. Since a lot of narratives focus on Daddy and Brother Issues, it's a breath of fresh air to read her books.
I went through a brief Stephen King phase when I was younger. It wore off, but I still like his books, such as his short stories and other lesser known books such as "The Eye of the Dragon."

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Katara, actually. While she isn't my favorite character on the show, I agree that she's one of the most developed female characters I've come across in a animated show.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Azula. At the end, I just ended up feeling sorry for her more than anything. I still wouldn't trust her, but I hope she got better and found peace in her life. Hopefully Avatar Korra's series will reveal something about her.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: I'm not sure. The fandom seems torn on Suki. People either really love her or really hate her. I'm in between. I like her, but I never connected to her personally, not the way I did with the other ladies on the show.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Mai! Fuck the haters, she's awesome.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: I don't think I've had this problem with the show. Once I love a character, it usually sticks.

They're cute together, but neither of them do much for me. Haruka is interesting enough to escape from this radar, though. Sorry, Michiru. I still kind of like you. :(
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know what fandom hates. Mamoru/Usagi fans--which are IN HUGE NUMBERS--seem to hate Seiya, which I'm never going to understand.
