observations from lane 16…

There’s about 4 more weeks of bowling left… Thank goodness I’m just a substitute. I’m a horrible bowler… See past tweets…  What’s really sad is that a photo of my grandpa hangs in the hall of fame of this local alley… I SOOO didn’t get the genetics… But, hey, I did do the color correction and printing of said photo. :)

It’s interesting to watch other ladies on the league:
  • Some bowl like it hurts. They shuffle along in the approach and upon releasing of the ball sometimes they quiver there - I half expect them to topple over and set off the foul buzzer. More times than naught the ball goes pretty slow and hits most of the pins. And yes, most of these are from the older generations.
  • Some bowl like dancers. Seriously, I wish I could be one of these girls. There’s the “hop-run-pull back and swing-stop-let go-fling arm up high” move. It’s powerful, and many of the girls have their own slight variation. The best part is, they get their pins. Yes, this is more of the younger generation…
  • Some take it easy. Just walk on up, swing back and roll gently. These take a little while, but they are steady players, and do quite well.

Then there’s me. I swear, I have too many variations of bowling. Stand straight, feet together, is it the thumb/forefinger at the 10/2? Stride up, swing back (hold on tight) and roll. Sometimes I take it easy, sometimes I use the force… and a Jedi I am not. Left arm is usually sticking out straight to the side in a pathetic attempt at gracefulness and balance.  And don’t forget that the right foot has to swing back behind the left. Then I was told once that I should stick out my boobs. Another told me to stand on the side that I'm always guttering in (um, I gutter equally, thank you very much). Hey, I’m happy if I get 7 pins (but not just the 7 pin). More often than not, I don’t allow myself to see the result because once it veers off to the right or left, I turn and leave the lane… as if it’s bad luck to see it go in the gutter or something. Brush it off. Go again.

I can’t be that bad, right? Well back in January, my average was 80. Tonight it’s at a whopping 82. I’m slowly improving.

And NO, there is not special parking for people who bowl like me.

another post will be following shortly… will finally catch up with some fanfic recs and a new literary obsession of late…
