There was a beautiful storm today.
My favorite part of summertime in Florida, is the Sunday storm. Crawling into bed and dozing off to the sound of rain rapping against my window.
I was driving through STC on my way home when it began. I had my windows down and could spell the rain from a mile away. It smelled fresh. Slowly as I drove from St. Cloud down Neptune Road I was engulfed in the dark clouds. I could see bright shinny white clouds a mile down, closer to my house and knew it was just a matter of time before they too taken over by these black cloudy formations in the sky.
Little tiny specks of water began to hit my windshield and I sped up in hopes of beating home the harder rain that I knew was to come. Just then Dan Stone wailed through my radio speakers. There is always something calm and soothing about his voice. I feel like I know this man, as if he is part of my close circle of friends. He speaks of the storms going on up closer to the station in Maitland, and how they have issued tornado warnings all over the central Florida area. He quickly follows this news up with the names and artists of the last three songs:
Juliana Hatfield - Spin The Bottle
The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
Lucero - Sixteen
I think to myself how only Dan could go from early 90's alternative, to whiskey country in the same set. At the same time a loud bang of thunder clashes and the harder rain has now attacked.
I get my window's up as quick as possible and almost miss the turn into my neighborhood. I park and think it might just be easier waiting it out in the car, as to not get soaked trying to get in. I hear the raspy voice of Tom Gabel of Against Me! coming back from a commercial break and know it's a sign to get the hell out of the car.
So, I do.
I make the mad dash into the house, ending up only slightly damp ... and do exactly what I knew I was going to do the second I saw the first dark cloud in the sky.
As I walk from the front door to my room, I strip off every piece of clothing I have on, piece by piece, and grab my Good Clean Fun hoodie I have hanging on my chair, as I pull it on over my head and pull the sheets back on my bed.
Four hours later, here I sit, now awake from the perfect lazy afternoon sleep. If only all Sundays were this easy.
