Animals given intelligence and the means to destroy themselves sounds like a galactic experiment. Will they wallow and die or strive and raise themselves?
As a favourite game of mine said, "What does gender matter? I have power and *power* is beautiful." Manipulating elements is survival. Controlling them, bending them, that's power. But that's not the society we live in. We're taught from birth to conform, obey, and force others to do the same. It pretty much takes forcing a piece of your brain to sleep and being in a situation where that is acceptable to go beyond that.
Of course, this rarely turns out well. You can't give a 13th gen Methuselah's thirst and expect him to control it with any skill. Or at all.
But, we instinctively gravitate towards those we suspect will fulfill our needs in some way. That's probably what causes waking up in bed next to someone you regret meeting. That stupid but strong part of your brain is your mammal's instinct for survival. Yuppies desire more things because it makes them feel more secure. Artists desire specific things, not necessarily of value to anyone, because it fills a space in their mind and heart. One has a drive to win, one has a drive to experience. That's why poets are best when drunk.
Natural Man is not desputable. But he is controllable.
