And before I go to bed, here's a rant about Arthur and Eames that I wrote while my brain was breaking (not drunk or high or anything, just overworked and sleep-deprived). It kind of shows. I wouldn't recommend reading this, actually.
i'm in love with fanon!Eames but that doesn't make him real (UNLESS YOU'VE READ THE VELVETEEN RABBIT 'CAUSE SHIT GODDAMN THEN HE IS SO REAL AAAAAAAAAAAAAA) there's this goofiness and outrageousness to him and it's really not supported by canon
eames isn't as flamboyant and loud as fandom thinks he is, you know? i get the impression that he's casual but reserved and he doesn't give much away and he doesn't trust many people and he's always aware of what's going on around him and it's really just with arthur that he shows… i don't know, playfulness. Teasing. he seems kind of cold towards cobb, and maybe he'd be very wary of cobb because the man is kind of crazy. and so eames is only loud and flirtatious and social when he's scamming, i think. also very self-preserving, not willing to put up with b.s., not self-sacrificing most of the time. thief and forger, very much living on the illegal side so he's got that mindset. much more likely to have many fake identities.
but arthur. arthur is much more of a slave to human emotion. arthur is kind of loyal and stuff? he thinks the inception job is a bad idea but he follows cobb anyway, and he knows about mal, and he still supports cobb. So then, he's reserved, but also has a temper, and he's kind of uptight (gets miffed at eames easily) but he's not always wearing a suit and he's not like a robot at all, and he's not bad at improvising (he does have imagination, that thing with the elevator?) and he doesn't like being condescended to. dom says 'every man for himself' but arthur follows him like snap. and he's playful, he pulled that kiss thing with ariadne, and they seemed pretty friendly (when saito says he's bought the airline later cobb's like 'good job' and they kind of smile at each other, and he's caring (reassures ariadne when she's all panicky after dying when mal stabs her) and why does he help eames with his IV thing on the second level? anyway arthur doesn't act without thinking unless he's fighting/driving aggressively etc. a very rational person, but still emotionally driven. and very good at playing devil's advocate. pessimistic ("He hasn't shown, wanna wait?").
whereas eames is more driven by logic, but still optimistic. i mean, really, he's much less likely to put faith in someone, right? and then there's the fact that he knows so much about people, so it's probably disillusioned him and he's kind of disappointed with humanity as a whole so he doesn't expect much, it's very guilty until proven innocent? but he's not an extrovert. reallyyyy. arthur's more likely to commit emotionally, i think. is arthur likely to keep himself from indulging in his attraction to eames…? probably. but… but… i think eames is more likely to do that. I think the way eames acts around arthur is totally different than the way he acts around most other people.
arthur's frustrated with eames sometimes? because hm. when he's like 'i am impressed' it doesn't really seem like condescension, it seems like he means it, but maybe he has a habit of underestimating eames so eames always thinks he's being mocked, and arthur is always criticizing eames's ideas, and it seems like eames retaliates sometimes by being annoying and sometimes by being really competent/out-doing arthur. because eames is like 'why not?' where arthur is like 'why?' and arthur doesn't know how to explain when he's being genuine. and eames seems kind of passively amused by arthur, and his use of words like 'specificity'
and face it, in the movie eames calling arthur 'darling' wasn't quite an endearment (even if it was), it was him kind of snarking at Arthur because Arthur was all mean to him when he was telling them about Fischer's daddy issues. It was kind of to piss him off, and it was condescending and superior and things that most people hate to start with, and this is arthur he's saying it to. and arthur is already kind of beating himself up for messing up. when people have eames calling arthur pet names all the time... it's sweet and adorable and i love it but damnit i can't see it as realistic yet. this is why i don't buy most established-relationship fics. i just can't see them getting together naturally or quickly because even if they were gay and had feelings for each other, neither of them would act on those feelings.
and nother thing, the clothes? admittedly i'm a pretty accepting person, and definitely not knowledgeable about style, but i don't have a problem with eames's clothing. it seems to really fit him, esp. when he's looking all old-school colonial english. fanon has him being so incredibly poorly dressed, and has arthur hating his clothes all over the place, but i just keep getting distracted by his crotch (well that's true about any of tom hardy's roles). if anyone wants to explain to me why/how eames is poorly dressed, that'd be helpful.
