Of maxipads and other monstrosities (if thats how you spell it)

Feb 23, 2007 13:50

As of Wednsday, i have been here exactly 6 weeks. Which means I have exactly 6 more weeks to go.
I find that ridiculously hard to believe.
I don't think it can have been that long. Or that little.

Some days i feel like my Spanish is really coming along. Other times i feel embarrassed that I've been here this long and still cant say everything that i want to. I'm going to be really disappointed if I havent improved quite a bit more by the time i leave.

This week we got a new baby at the orphanage. She's a month old and sooooo tiny.
I asked Yolanda what her name was, but she didn't know. I just call her Bebita (little Baby).
Shes one of those babies whose actually kind of ugly, but you say “awwwww she's so cute” anyway just cuz she's so little. I think this is something people do universally, the smaller the baby, the “cuter” he/she is. Girls get extra cuteness points right away, on pure principal.
Bebita is a girl. Shes also very small. You do the cuteness math.

Moving onto a slightly different subject...
It's fairly common for people to stand around and hand out random bits of in the streets. Usually the crap is a flier advertising their window washing company or promoting some stupid band. But about a week ago as i got on the train, some lady with a huge bag of 'handouts' stopped me and gave me....
a package of maxipads.
“What the heck?!” thought I “Cant a semi-normal human being walk down the streets these days without being accosted by menstrual supplies?” I amused myself the rest of the day by taking them out and applying them to various surfaces. Buildings...windows....cars with republican bumper stickers....
:) Maybe that will teach them to think before they vote.

Time for a random picture

Thats Nancy on the left and Maria on my head. Both girls are in mi clase secondario. They're decent enough kids.... when they actually show up for class.
Oh, and it turns out my camera takes video too...

Not quite sure how this happened.... one second we were studying verbs, the next second its the Queens. Sorta.

Ok, quick glance into my last weekend.
Last Saturday Holly and i ventured out on an excursion to the Tiangris Culturo with Kelsey, Carlos and Jonathon. It was quite an experience. Its a massive gathering of little shops and stands selling just about everything you could imagine, and it happens every Saturday. Reminded me of FolkLife, except quite a bit smaller, and full of metal head Mexicans instead of hippie-like Seattlites. For the first hour me and Holly handed out fliers, promoting for Carlos and Jonathon's Concert (my revenge for all the concert fliers i've received since i've gotten here). After we'd rid ourselves of several hundred, we abandoned the other guys to wander and observe. It was really really cool, you could find just about anything you wanted. We listened to different bands play at the stage, meandered through about a hundred stalls, received more fliers than we'd handed out, tried to lose a pair of stalker-like mexican boys, haggled with shop owners and bought a super cool jacket for Holly with built in Mohawk. We returned home satisfied with our adventure and arranged to meet again that night at el Centro Magnum for a Movie.

The “movie” we ended up seeing turned out to be “Ghost Rider” which was just as stupid and predictable as you might imagine from the name and previews.

I tried to describe my disgust for this awful cinestrofically pathetic excuse for a movie, but words failed me. Especially when i discovered (to my appall and horror) that my two movie going companions thought that it was a “Brilliant Flick”.
Once again i was labeled as the over zealous cinematic critic just because i happen to find flaming skeletons on motorcycles to be more of a directors rather desperate attempt at entertainment than a badass display of genius (which is what Holly and Carlos seemed to believe it was).
The things i put up with, just cuz i happen to have taste.

In other news a bus cut me off as i was crossing the street the other day. About 5 seconds later it ran into a car. Really gives you faith in the public transportation system.
It was so ironic and stupid, I was almost amused.

Special shout out to Ian Hubert the Amazing. Yes kid you are indeed awesome. The other day (ok actually like a week ago, but thats even more impressive cuz that means i've remembered this long!) he dropped me a line that that went something like
“Know that you're still in our conversations! 'When's Kellianne coming back?' Me: 'March or something' 'oh.' We miss you!"
Previous to this statement i was of the opinion that by the time i returned i'd have to remind people of what my name was in case they'd forgotten. Go Ian! I cant tell you how cool that made me feel. When i get home ima make you a cake. A dog cake.

Mexico says “hola” to anyone whose interested.
Life goes on, and i'm ½way done.
Missing you all.
