I'm feeling a bit gypped, as everyone else seems to have today off but I don't. Oh well. I get next Wednesday off and I might get a Peri tomorrow, so it's all good. Also, 6th Hill fashion show tonight, and they're doing their bowling-ball thing.

Today in Latin my teacher started translating people's names spur-of-the-moment. I thought I had him

Quite honestly I wouldn't know why one would translate Marika as Amara rather than Mariella, but ok... what's the Pristina supposed to be? [/smart-assing]

Marika = bitter, at least as far as I've always learned. Pristina-- "pure, pristine." My last name in Frisian.

Ah. I was going by the interpretation of Marika being a pet form of Maria (which means something with bitterness, too, so it works), like the German Mariechen, the Dutch Marijke, or the Finnish Maarika. So Mariella would've been the most obvious choice, even though Maria is latinized Hebrew in the first place...

Aaah. If it's your last name, that works. I was wondering where the pristine was in Marika. The name, I mean. ;)

My parents thought they made the name up, mixing Mariko and Marijke. Then they found out that it's used in basically every country east of France, and by that time I'd already been christened. XD So it's not meant to be a pet name, no, though it's quite obviously a derivative of Mary.

He was translating the names based on meaning, not their etymology-- so his name, Owen, ended up Miles (any spelling mistakes on that are my fault) and Joshua Smith ended up Salus Ferrandus.
