So today I had a near-death experience.
It's my habit to take a walk around the neighborhood at least once a day, or whenever I get bored. I get small-scale wanderlust and want to run around, so I strap on my iPod and I get out. In Michigan it's been my wont to walk around my aunt and uncle's neighborhood.
I started to get antsy today and headed out into the wilds of suburbia again. I walked on the pavement road, which winds up from my relatives' house and into a road, then into the freeway. As I was walking around the curve in the road, this white car came barrelling toward me. Most cars don't drive on that side of the road, so I was taken completely by surprise, and I jumped to the brush on the side of the road in terror. The car screeched to a halt and the driver rolled down his passenger-side window to talk to me. In addition to asking if I was all right, if I lived around here, and if I was from the neighborhood, he also asked me where I was from, how old I was, how long I was in town, and what I was studying in college. I answered in bemusement. This guy had just almost hit me with his car.
As he rolled down the window he said, "I'm sorry I almost ran you over. But at least we met!"
I stared after his car open-mouthed for a few minutes before laughing weakly, because I wasn't sure whether to burst into uncontrollable laughter or tears.
