Time for back to school

Jan 04, 2009 23:30

Here I go again. Now it's time to get ready for the big, unbroken chunk of school year. I have to focus myself and focus my groups and focus my department. It's the time of the year that holds the least in natural motivation (especially February), but has the biggest stakes. Concerts, solo and ensemble, festival, conferences. We all crash into April wondering what hit us. This time of year is dark for me, not just because of the literal darkness, but because it zings by so quickly that I can't remember what hit me. :)

I'm not complaining. In a way, it's exhilarating. Still, I feel like I'm girding my loins for battle. I like that phrase. I'm battling against rhythmic and intonation errors. I'm battling against the natural apathy of the pre-teen and teen in the winter months. I'm battling for true musical expression from young people whose musical attention span has been cultivated to be 3 1/2 minutes long with lyrics. I'm battling to teach them to think and express and create.

Good. Now that I feel all important, my loins are girded.

This has to be one of my weirdest posts.
