I finally watched one of these presidential candidate debate thingies all the way through. (Because Patt told me to lolz*.) The most important thing I learned was that Wolf Blitzer is really, really annoying.

Sally is ignorant. )

He wants to abolish the federal income tax and go back on the gold standard.

1) sure, 2) whoa. interesting. i bet he would run into a lot of resistance from the status quo, and even his own cabinet...

YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING ABOUT THE GOLD STANDARD. in my world economy class, we just spent the last month studying the gold standard / pax britannica / bretton woods / etc etc... and believe me there is no way in hell any kind of return to the gold standard could work. that would fuck over the world economy so badly and the system would collapse within a few yrs. um just for that ron paul gets crossed off the list IMMEDIATELY.

oh god, the wikipedia entry on him is scary as fuck. he wants the US to withdraw from nato/un/wto? he wants the US gov't to fund itself w/ TARIFFS?? ew and he's all about states' rights. i wish states could just be abolished altogether, but that will never happen. i also like how he claims to support free trade but wants the US to leave NAFTA and put in tariffs... um please explain the logic??

dude, this guy is my anti-candidate. consider me terrified.

I KNOW!!! I love (and by love, I mean hate) how ultra-leftist hippies are jumping on the Ron Paul bandwagon by the truckload because Ron Paul supports immediate withdrawal from Iraq and "adheres to the Constitution,"* and they don't realize that a strict, literal interpretation of the Constitution pretty much means that the federal government ceases to exist/have any power. And you know what the worst part is? I'm starting to see more and more people seriously question "what's wrong with the gold standard? Why shouldn't we back up our currency?" etc. Take a freakin' economics class, people. Ugh.

*I guess they got sick of Kucinich or something, although the "Paul/Kucinich 2008!" people are the most hilarious, because Paul and Kucinich pretty much have polar opposite views.

P.S. Ron Paul seems like a nice, sincere person though (as opposed to most candidates). I'm not attacking him. I'm attacking the people who support him without knowing what they're supporting.

oh and reducing taxes is probably not a very good idea. see reaganomics and aftermath for how catastrophic that can be.
