I have to have books vertical because of my neck trouble. I find clothes pegs are handy...

That would wok - except with the really fat ones, but they would probably stand upright if you put them on a high enough flat surface :)

I've never heard of book weights! I do love my Book Seat though. It has a perspex strip at the bottom with a stretchy cord to tighten it against the book; you just flip it down to turn a page. One of the best things I've bought: hands-free and good for laps, tables, whatever.
