HAVE A KID, MR TEACHER.kaiser_in_rehabJanuary 24 2011, 22:06:20 UTC
Since those voices had stopped, Ken had had a difficult time getting his life back together. He was skittish and shyer than usual, wary of the chance that the Kaiser's voice might materialize itself again. Maybe it was still inside him? The thought had been plaguing him ever since the event started, even while he was at work or walking to and from it. Those were the only things he had managed to do this past week.
As he hustled by, a crunch in the snow caught his attention. His head shot up. The only person nearby was someone completely unfamiliar. Someone new? Well, they did seem to be coming out of the forest.
"Um...excuse me?" he called tentatively, "do you need some help?"
\o/! HURRAH SOMEONE TO TEACHstonecoldsenseiJanuary 25 2011, 00:19:36 UTC
Having been around students who have a meek tone of voice, his ears have been trained to hear silent calls like the one he just heard. His head turned to the voice and he frowned at the sight.
A school-age boy...? Was it a weekend today? He doubted it, and it couldn't have been a national holiday, either.
Nevertheless, Himuro approached the boy. Normally, Himuro would jumped at the question asked and say 'yes, I seem to be lost, can you help me?' or something along those lines, but... his teacher instinct kicked in instead and the following questions slipped out instead of the more appropriate answer.
"What are you doing wandering around? Shouldn't you be in school at this time?"
DON'T SCARE HIM AWAY NOWkaiser_in_rehabJanuary 25 2011, 02:05:32 UTC
Well, the man was coming closer. Ken could only hope that this would turn out better than the grabbing and dragging the last new person he had talked to put him through. But the question threw him off entirely.
"School?" he asked, confused for a moment. He had been on Salkia for almost two years without having anything close to formalized schooling. It had only crossed his mind the few times when Ritsuka mentioned it, or when the school building first became available. But an adult caring about it?
"Oh," he said quickly, realizing how he must have looked, "um...we don't really have a running school here. Um, welcome to Salkia Island."
SORRY MAN HIMURO SCARES EVERYONEstonecoldsenseiJanuary 25 2011, 11:50:38 UTC
Ken, you have just received the most horrifyingly doubtful look from Himuro for that excuse, complete with crossed arms and raised eyebrow. That was a really bad excuse, and not only saying that to someone who obviously works in the educational system, but saying that to Himuro of all people? Bad idea...
At least the young man was kind enough to tell him where he was... though he was pretty sure that there was no island called "Salkia Island" anywhere in Japan.
"There is some form of a running educational system in all civilizations. Do you really expect me to believe such an excuse?"
Oh dear. Ken stepped back under that look, heat rushing to his face. He had been here too long. That excuse should have come from his notoriously school-neglecting friend, not him. His parents would have been ashamed. Even if it was the truth.
"I...well..we've never had a teacher here before," he stammered, trying to explain the best he could. "There's a school building, and a library, but it's kind of hard to learn...by yourself."
Himuro sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. This was ridiculous. It seemed like the kid wasn't lying about there not being any formal schooling here in this "Salkia Island", but why would there not be any schooling in the first place? Didn't these kids care about their future?
And a perfectly good school and library being wasted like that? Unacceptable.
"A person doesn't need to be a teacher in order to teach others. Aren't there perfectly able-bodied adults in this town who could be teaching the children?"
"Um...well..." What to say to that? There were nice people here, but teachers? Ritsuka had tried to gather some interest, but it was hard if the island was going to interrupt every few weeks by turning everyone green or something.
"Some of us tried to talk some people into it," he said carefully, "..but people kind of get distracted. There are monsters and things that the owner of the island does that kind of...draw attention."
There was another moment where Ken wrestled with what exactly to say. "And..um, a lot of the adults here are still pretty young themselves, and some of them are....kind of eccentric."
