Here, have some family Merthur fluff!
“Arthur?” Merlin called from the kitchen.
Arthur, working in his home office just down the hall from the kitchen, didn’t look up from reading over an email as he called back, “Yeah?”
“Were you in the kitchen earlier?”
Arthur furrowed his brows at that, but kept reading. “Yes. I was making myself some tea,” he called in return, then frowned as a sinking feeling came over him. “Why?”
“You left something out and now we have a mess,” Merlin responded and the sinking feeling got worse.
“I’m on my way,” Arthur called as he ran a hand through his hair. Sighing, he pushed himself away from the desk and walked from the office to the kitchen. He only got to the doorway of the kitchen before he saw what Merlin was talking about.
Merlin was standing in the kitchen, his face a mixture of annoyance and amusement as he looked in the middle of the kitchen at the mess.
The mess, to be specific, was their two year old daughter, Ainsley and the honey that covered her. It was in her hair, all over her clothes, on her feet and she was even sitting in it. It was everywhere, and there was more going on the floor as she tried to draw shapes with it. The honey bottle was sitting next to her, nearly empty.
Arthur felt embarrassed, guilty, and at the same time, amused. He looked at Merlin and sighed deeply. “Merlin, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think she could get up there!”
“You really underestimate the determination of a bored two years old,” Merlin responded, shaking his head as Ainsley looked up and gave Arthur a toothy grin.
“Dada! I honeybee!” she proudly exclaimed as she waved her hands to show off her honeyed self. Arthur just chuckled and smiled at her.
“Yes, you are! And you’re a cute honeybee,” Arthur said to her in amusement, before looking at his partner and sighing. “I really am sorry, Merlin,” he apologized guiltily.
Merlin gave Arthur a long suffering look before he cracked a smile and shook his head. “It’s fine, Arthur,” he said, then nodded at Ainsley. “You can make it up to me by bathing her.”
That was fair. Arthur nodded in response, then carefully went over to the blonde toddler and smiled down at her. “Alright, Miss Honeybee. You need a bath while we talk about playing with food.”
Ainsley nodded. “Ok,” she said and carefully got up, lifting her arms once she was standing. “Up!” she demanded Arthur.
In response, Arthur whimpered slightly before he picked up the two year old and put her on his hip, looking at Merlin when he heard the click! of a camera, and groaned. “Merlin!”
“You owe me,” Merlin responded, pointing at the mess on the floor before he put his phone away and waved at them. “Shoo! Bath time.”
“Baff! Baff! Baff!” Ainsley cheered and Arthur chuckled at her and kissed her cheek carefully as he walked with the sticky child to the bathroom.
Being a parent wasn’t easy at all. But a daughter like Ainsley and a husband like Merlin made it enjoyable and worthwhile.
