Addressing the state of the Kitty

Several times over the last week or so, I've been thinking to post about my little ginger-tipped cat but never got to it.

Tuesday last, I looked out the window to check on Gracy outside on the leash and it was evident he was as close to the back door as he could be. I knew this meant he wanted my attention and probably to come in. When I got downstairs I found him with a profound limp. There wasn't any obvious cause for it, but he didn't like me handling it and he didn't like stretching it out. He put just a little weight on it. He proceeded to sleep the next day away. I made a vet appointment for Thursday, just in case it didn't get better. When he did show marked improvement in less than a day I canceled it.

By that time, a patch of fur came off his skin just above the elbow, and he had been licking it obsessively. I tried a poultice and to dress it, but the moisture-absorbent dressing came off 3 hours later due to constant licking, and he seemed to want to eat it. :P

He was almost walking normally by Sunday, when my daughter came by to help my clean out the garage. (When I say clean out, I mean get rid of stuff. She is much better at being ruthless than I am) He had taken to jumping up to my shoulder again. He started out on the leash, but eventually I put him in the porch, and went in and out of the house through the side door, so I wouldn't need to worry about him. Unfortunately I didn't warn the daughter unit when she had to go inside. Therefore he escaped.

He was gone an hour or so, and came back dirty and limping. I was worried about the dirty part, because he loves to roll in the dirt, doncha know? I thought he had just gotten over-zealous and jumped too much, and that caused the limp.

A couple of days later, it was clear that it was infected and his limp was markedly worse. I ran him to the vet during my workday. Something magical happened that I was able to do that. I got antibiotics and cone I was expecting, but there was a bit of pondering about the possibility of lava spread by bunnies. He did admit that there wouldn't be a sudden onset of limping in that case. We both thought it was possible someone shot him with a beebee gun, although he never bled that I saw. It was just the shape of the wound, and couldn't figure out what could have caused it.

As of Friday he was well enough to be driving me up the wall wanting to go out. He has been enjoying the Kefir milk, which I've been giving him because vets seem to like augmentin.

stupid mammal tricks, health, kitty
