About two weeks ago, I was rooming a patient in Cardiology. This person was taking all kinds of supplements. She used to be grossly obese, and then had one of the diversionary surgeries. At her "best," she had lost 180 pounds. She was indeed a really big woman.
However, now she can't keep her mineral balance straight, due to absorption issues. She told me that she used to be a healthy obese woman, and now she is in to the doctor often to take care of her various ailments.
One of the problems she has is trouble keeping her sodium level up. She can't find salt tablets, and feels like she is salting her food as much as she can. She eats some chips before going to bed at night, but the carbs are cutting into her gains in the weight loss department. I recommended olive tapenade to her, and she was happy with that. :-)
