Last week, my paternal grandfather passed away at the age of 91.
The initial call was made on Tuesday night, but wasn't received until Wednesday shortly after arriving at work. Chris (the IL brother) and I then made plans to attend services which were scheduled to start sometime the following day. We met up in Indianapolis that evening and drove through the night to Brooklyn, NY. The wake was a single day as opposed to the traditional three, but plenty of friends and family made it. The Catholic funeral was tasteful and spared long-winded sermons. Lots of family attended, many of them being relatives I had never met before. My brother and I departed shortly after a post-funeral lunch, arriving in Indianapolis between 3 and 4 Saturday morning. I got home around 5 with my brother reaching his home about two hours later. It was exhausting, but worth the effort; I may need to make a more concerted effort to visit that region more often/at all.
In the aftermath, my car is now in the danger zone (DANGER ZOOOONE!!!) in need of an oil change and related maintenance. I usually plan these for either my Friday off or Saturdays. My RDO was last Friday and I had plans to be out of town again this weekend to attend a friend's wedding (the trip will hit the mileage cap for the next round of service). Since the 40K service is a bit more involved that a simple oil change, getting it scheduled is proving to be a pain. If I can't get that taken care of, I'll have no choice but stay in town this weekend.
