Chapter #1
“Oh fuck!” Reid groaned falling forward as Luke drove him into the mattress. The hands that had been holding tight to the headboard had slipped off as Luke found a pounding rhythm and Reid’s hands were slick with sweat and couldn’t grip any longer.
“Reeeid!” Luke’s drawn out yell rang in Reid’s ears as Reid collapsed onto the pillow and Luke followed him down landing across Reid’s sweat covered back.
This had been the norm for these two, every first weekend of the month they spent in Boston in Reid’s condo if they could manage it. Casey would head over to Kara’s so Luke and Reid had the place to themselves. It was the first weekend in May and it looked like they wouldn’t get another chance for a number of months to spend together in Boston but then they may not need it soon.
“I think we need to put this bed in the Master bedroom in the Cape Cod house,” Luke panted into Reid’s neck where sweaty red-blonde curls lay tangled.
Reid turned his head and huffed at his very insatiable boyfriend, “You think?” he teased flexing his fingers and trying to get the blood flowing through them again.
“Uh-huh,” Luke nuzzled Reid’s neck inhaling and kissing his cheek.
Luke had finally told Reid about the house on Valentine’s Day. He didn’t know what to get his very non-romantic boyfriend and he thought telling Reid about the house was a perfect gift. By early February the initial repairs inside of the house had been completed and it was ready for the next series of renovations and changes that Luke had been thinking of for the inside of the house and he wanted Reid’s input.
Luke had first wanted to complete the repairs to the outside of the house but with the snowiest and coldest winter in recent years they had to change their focus. Scott had managed to close up any openings to prevent snow coming in and causing more damage to the inside of the house. Reid had been curious on that frigid Valentine’s Day when Luke told him he had a surprise for him.
“I told you Luke that I usually forget all holidays and I will probably forget your birthday,” Reid had sputtered in reminder. Reid hadn’t forgotten it was Valentine’s Day but it was the first time he’d ever had to give something to someone.
In his haste to think of something he decided to pick-up a heart shaped donut for Luke and then almost ate it when he missed lunch. Now the chocolate donut looked more like a squashed pancake and not a heart after Reid had accidentally put his shoes on top of it in his locker at the hospital. Now later that afternoon Reid sighed as he watched the familiar scenery pass by with his Valentine gift sitting in his duffel bag, he hoped Luke wouldn’t be too upset.
It was a balmy - 10 F and luckily it wasn’t’ snowing, at least not that day. They had six feet on the ground already and it was only mid-February predictions were up to eight feet by the time winter was over which was probably late March or early April. Reid had looked over at Luke who was gnawing at the bottom of his lip and gripping the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles were white.
“Uhm Luke are you okay?” Reid had asked and Luke looked over at Reid giving him what he hoped was a reassuring smile.
“I’m good Reid, really good, just a little nervous,” he admitted as he gunned his FJ Cruiser to get threw the snow bank that had blown into the front of the lane since he’d been there earlier in the day.
“Luke?” Reid asked suddenly realizing where he was, “Why are we going to my Uncle Angus’s and Patrick’s old house?”
Luke didn’t answer as he took the final bend and the front of the house came into view. Reid’s brow furrowed in confusion when he spotted a large red cellophane heart taped to the front door.
“Luke?” he asked again his voice wavering as the implications to what the heart meant on the front door, “No,” he added and looked over at Luke who had a huge smile on his face although the tapping on the steering wheel betrayed his nervousness.
“Uhm, Happy Valentine’s Day Reid,” Luke stammered and Reid’s eyes widened as the full realization that Luke had bought his uncles’ house hit him, “I hope you’re not mad,” Luke fumbled and pushed on quickly, “I wanted to surprise you, and well I was going to wait until it was done, but I really want your ideas so we can make it our home,” Luke rushed on and stopped as Reid put a finger against Luke’s lips.
“Thank-you,” Reid said firmly pulling Luke forward into a hard kiss, “I’m not mad, not at all, I’m just surprised, I can’t believe that you bought it.”
“I know it seems fast but I bought it for us, you, me and Holly. I wanted to keep the house in the Oliver family and well I feel like I’m part of the Oliver family now,” Luke finished searching Reid’s eyes for confirmation.
Reid’s eyes filled at Luke’s words and he had to swallow a few times to remove the lump he suddenly found in his throat, “I love you Luke Snyder, and yes you are my family, you and Holly,” Reid told him honestly, “If you had asked me a few years ago I would’ve told you I had nobody and now well everything has changed. I realize that I have so much more, Scott, Alex, Uncle Angus and Patrick, Bridget, Jeff and his kids and Mary they’re all my family and you’re a huge part of that you and Holly,” Reid stopped and Luke let out a breath of relief at Reid’s words.
Now almost three months later they were ready to move into the house. They had designed the inside together Luke wanted a large kitchen and Reid a study that both men could share and a large family room for all of them that looked out over the inland bay. Both wanted a large bathroom with a shower for two and the master bedroom was on the main floor and Holly had a room upstairs with a large loft playroom. Two more guestrooms were upstairs with a shared bathroom for visitors. Reid had grumbled about the cost and Luke smiled and kissed him telling him not to worry.
“I know you’re a trust fund brat Luke but I’m not poor and I want to pay my share,” Reid had argued throughout the renovations.
“I will pay your part for now and set-up a payment plan for your half so you can pay me back, if that will make you feel better,” Luke had conceded and Reid had agreed.
“And not just sexual favours Mr. Snyder, those are for free and not part of the payment plan,” Reid added and Luke’s face fell.
“Ah damn Reid, and I had some great ideas for some bonus payments,” Luke teased in response.
“We can still explore those idea’s Luke,” Reid waggled his eyebrows at Luke, “But not as part of the renovation repayment.”
Luke and Barrett had drawn up a formal contract stipulating the payments over a ten-year term. Reid had nodded in agreement and signed the document reading the amount to be paid on a monthly basis and decided to let it go. Luke, Reid had found out was stubborn and persistent as well as sweet and loving.
Reid knew that once he saw those arms crossed and that “don’t fuck with me look” on Luke’s face then he was hard pressed to change his mind. Reid had learned first hand that under the seemingly hearts and flowers exterior was a man as hard as nails. Reid should’ve realized it with Luke’s no-nonsense approach with Holly. When Luke decided he wanted to go to Oakdale for Easter Break and take Holly and Reid to meet his family their was no-changing his mind.
“I want to see my family Reid, and I want you and Holly to meet them,” Luke had explained to Reid for the millionth time.
It was a slow wear down time and when Holly started in on Reid well, that was it. Holly would say to Reid how much she wanted to meet Luke’s Grandma Emma and see all of the pretty horses that Luke’s dad had. Reid knew then that he’d lost this fight.
“You fight dirty Mr. Snyder, using Holly as part of your strategic team,” Reid had accused a very smug Luke Snyder.
“Moi? I don’t think so Dr. Oliver, but I’ll make it up to you if you feel that I’ve cheated you in some way,” Luke had offered and Reid had snorted muttering under his breath.
“You bet you will,” and Luke honoured his promise.
The visit to Oakdale was memorable, that’s for certain and Reid’s fondest memories were of Emma Snyder’s dinners and breakfasts. A quirky restaurant called Al’s that served amazing chili and cornbread was another It’s owner a man named Henry Coleman “Hank” as Reid called him wore the most outrageous and ugly shirts that Reid had every seen.
“Well at least I know more than three colours Dr. Oliver,” Henry had volleyed back at Reid after another scathing remark attacking Henry’s bright orange with pink flamingo’s shirt.
Luke’s father or stepfather, Holden Snyder was a good man but Luke’s mother, Lily was something else. She gave Reid a very thorough once over and an interrogation like discussion. Holly charmed everyone, even Lily begrudging liked the little girl and Henry doted on her.
“I don’t know how you turned out so sweet my girl with him as your uncle,” Henry had told Holly one day as she complimented him on his lemon yellow shirt with bright blue bunnies, to celebrate Easter.
Holly had just shrugged and giggled and Henry added another scoop to her strawberry sundae. Luke’s younger sister Natalie spent the most time with Holly acting as her designated big sister which both loved. Ethan tolerated Holly, but was more excited to hang out with his big brother Luke. All in all it had been a successful visit with only one blowout between Luke and Lily. Reid hadn’t heard the initial discussion but he had heard the argument.
“Why can’t you be happy for me mom? I love Reid and he loves me,” Luke’s raised voice Reid heard and Reid couldn’t hear Lily’s response but whatever it was it just made Luke angrier.
“He left me mom, don’t you remember, me standing like some fucking idiot alone as my family and friends watched me being stood up at the altar!”
Lily’s voice responded again and this time Reid heard, “He was confused and scared Luke, but he wants to talk to you and explain and then maybe you can get back together.”
“I don’t want to ever speak to him again and if you love me you won’t mention his name to me ever again,” Luke’s voice was cold and final.
Reid jumped hearing the door slam and Luke walked out his eyes were glistening with unshed tears, “Let’s go,” he said quietly to Reid and Reid nodded grabbing one of Luke’s hands that had been shoved deep into his pockets.
Luke had been quiet for the rest of the evening playing with Holly and Reid waited until they went to bed before questioning Luke. “Are you okay?” Reid had asked as he climbed into bed.
“I am now,” Luke told him kissing Reid deeply, “Make love to me,” Luke whispered and Reid had, slowly and quietly, no condoms just gentle touches, soft kisses and a warm body to take Luke to places he’d never been with Noah and only would be with Reid.
Reid stretched and Luke yawned, “We better get up Harrison’s flight is arriving just after 1 pm and I want to make sure we’re there when he lands in case he has problems with customs.”
“Hmm, okay you head to the shower first and I’ll put the coffee on,” Reid suggested it was ten already and if he joined Luke in the shower they were never going to make it to the airport on time.
At almost thirty-seven, Reid was amazed the he could keep up with his now twenty-six year old boyfriend. He figured that once they moved in together the marathon nights of sex would decrease since they would be sleeping together every night instead of the two or three nights they squeezed in most weeks and then of course their weekends away together.
