Epilogue
January 1st. 2015
Three years and forty-five days sober, Luke wrote in his new journal one of the many presents Reid had surprised him with on Christmas morning. What a day it had been, Holly squealing with delight unwrapping her big animal hotel and all of the accessories bought by loving uncles. Even Santa had brought the Pet Beauty Salon where Holly could pretend to wash and primp her collection of dogs and puppies.
Luke had loved the gifts from Reid, an incredibly soft deep green cashmere sweater, leather winter driving gloves, and a green and blue tartan scarf with a matching green beanie. But it was the writing journals and pencils that had brought tears to Luke’s eyes and a lump in his throat.
“You told me that you wanted to start writing again and keeping a journal,” Reid had said watching Luke’s emotional response and the big hug and kiss he got told him that he’d done good.
Reid had laughed seeing the matching cashmere sweater in bright blue, the leather winter driving gloves, the bright blue and red tartan scarf with the matching bright blue beanie. “I guess Kit was having a bit of fun at our expense,” Reid stated seeing the same items in a different colour scheme lying in front of Luke.
When Reid unwrapped the last present from Luke his breath caught in his throat and he froze. It was a hand carved chess set that looked very old, Reid looked up at Luke in disbelief it was an absolutely beautiful chess set.
“Luke?” he questioned, “How did you know I loved chess?” It was true Reid had loved to play and had been amazingly talented. His Uncle Angus had taught him and he’d been winning all the competitions he’d entered but when his parents died he’s stopped playing. Then years later Reid found himself buying chess sets now he had at least ten in his condo in Boston.
Luke shrugged, “You had a few sets in your place in Boston so when I saw this in one of the little antique shops I thought you might like it. You do play don’t you?” Luke asked suddenly worried about his choice of gift.
Alex and Scott snorted from across the room, “Yeah he knows how to play,” Scott said and Reid shook his head in denial.
“I haven’t played in years though,” Reid admitted looking to Luke his eyes filled with love and tenderness, “But maybe I’ll play again and teach Holly,” Reid told Luke as Holly came to see the chess set, climbing into Reid’s lap and leaning back. She was already tired having come to Luke and Reid around 6 am and waking Reid up. Reid managed to keep her with them for about half an hour with Luke feigning sleep and Reid telling Holly not to wake him. Reid leaned forward over Holly’s shoulder giving Luke a soft kiss, “Thank you Luke,” he said quietly.
Luke nodded and smiled, “You’re welcome Reid.”
Christmas day had been busy with lots of food and lots of presents Luke had gone home after dinner at Mary’s, he needed to get a goodnight’s sleep before the store opened the next morning. The next few days were a blur of after Christmas sales and early nights. Luke and Reid managed dinner with Holly one night but didn’t see each other again until New Year’s Eve.
Luke had also been busy with a secret project that he hadn’t told Reid about. Luke had been introduced to Reid’s Uncle Angus and Uncle Patrick on Christmas morning via skype. The grey haired men beamed at Holly as she gave them an impromptu fashion show of her new Christmas clothes and of course her Christmas pajamas. Reid’s Uncle Angus’s hair was grey but his blue eyes mirrored his nephew’s as well as the freckles across the bridge of his nose. Patrick was a feisty Englishman, telling Reid and his brothers to put their house on the market as is. He and Angus didn’t want to spend the money and try and fix their beloved home.
“Are you sure?” the boys asked for the tenth time and the men nodded.
“We’ve discussed this for the past few months and Patrick and I agreed that selling it as is, is the best option. Without being there the house will fall to ruin anyway, so we decided the house deserved another chance with a new family that will love it as much as Patrick and I did,” Angus explained and Luke felt a lump in his throat and tears stinging his eyes at Reid’s Uncle’s words, it just solidified his resolve to do something with the once beautiful family home.
It took a few days of going back and forth but with Barrett Jones’s help Luke had bought Uncle Angus’s house as is. The only people who knew about the purchase were Barrett, Lucinda, Bridget and Scott. Scott was a big help telling Reid that someone had bought the house as is and that he’d been hired to help with the repairs and the renovations. Reid really didn’t want to discuss it and just grunted at Scott when Scott told him how fast the place had sold.
“Hey are you okay?” Luke had asked one day when Reid had snapped at Scott again.
“It’s just hard to see the house go to another family, I would’ve bought it myself but I have to think about Holly and the price was too high for me right now,” Reid admitted and Luke had to bite his tongue and not ruin the surprise he planned for Reid that spring when the house repairs and renovations were completed.
Now it was New Year’s Day 2015 and Luke sat in Reid’s Boston condo alone. Reid had been called by his friend Walter requesting his assistance with a new case and had left to go to the hospital, apologizing to Luke for leaving and Luke just smiling and telling him to be quick.
The previous night had been amazing they had both worked during the day and had arrived in Boston just after seven with a picnic basket for dinner. Luke had picked up some sour dough bread, cold cuts and cheese. Reid had been given leftover turkey and stuffing along with a thermos filled with Mary’s famous turkey frame soup. They sat in front of the fireplace on a picnic blanket eating, kissing and talking. Both telling the other how unexpected their meeting and falling in love had been.
“You’ve changed my life Snyder,” Reid told him, “I was fumbling around trying to find my way as a father figure for Holly and then there you were. It was so easy for you like breathing how you handled Holly you never treated her differently because of her not speaking. The rest of us walked on eggshells around her afraid she would break or shatter but not you to you she was just like everyone else. You were amazing and your warm and generous heart captured mine and I found myself falling in love for the first time in my life,” Reid tried to explain his whirlwind of feelings and Luke had shook his head and his words were so like Luke Snyder.
“I’m nothing special Reid, I didn’t have the history and connection with Holly. I wasn’t there as she watched her mom slip away, if I had I would’ve been walking on eggshells and worried that I would say or do something to make it more difficult for her. To me she was an adorable little girl who needed a push to get her back to living in the present and not stuck somewhere in the past,” Luke had told Reid and then explained what it meant to him meeting Reid and how it helped him start again, “When I came to Cape Cod last year my life was in a shambles, the man I thought I would be with forever left me. I’d felt so unloved and worthless Reid, I had a gaping hole in my heart and you and Holly filled it and then some. Finding my store and finding you has brought me back to life and I love you so much for bringing me Holly and making me a part of your family.”
“I love you too Luke,” Reid had said his voice gruff with emotion as he pushed Luke down on the picnic blanket and showed him just how much.
As the TV flickered and the clock counted down a naked Reid and Luke lay snuggled together, both satisfied and a little sticky.
“Happy New Year Dr. Oliver,” Luke said looking up at Reid his head was resting in the crook of Reid’s shoulder.
“Happy New Year Mr. Snyder,” Reid replied as he leaned over to give Luke a kiss and then continued to roll Luke onto his back once again.
The end for now…I know you all would like a bit more “sexytimes” but it didn’t fit in this final bit;-)
Coming in the fall 2015…A P-Town Reunion.
As the warm weather finally reaches P-Town after the coldest and snowiest winters in recent years Luke and Reid are busy with work, family and their new relationship. Family and friends are arriving to visit and spend time on the Cape and everyone is looking forward to Scott and Bridget’s wedding.
