The stone is cool in your palm, a comfortable weight that grounds you. You would be damned to participate in this silly nonsense, but you do it anyway. You have come this far, so you might as well.
Kenren is grinning widely as you toss the stone across the water. His lips twitch when it breaks the surface and sinks without a bounce, but he does not laugh. Just as he promised.

There's a slight tug upon your hair, and you wake to find that it's tangled in a mess, entwined between Kenren's long fingers. You want to pull it back, cinched in its usual tight braid, as though you could neatly put right all the rules that were broken in the heat of the moment. But something about what he said last night gives you pause.
"You should come with me, next time."
He promised you'd have the best of sake of your life on earth.
It's out of the question, you know. But there is something inside you that wants to taste it, just a little.
gone.
The promise was never to be.
For before it could come to fruition, everything fell apart. And now you are left with the truth you cannot see, but can feel upon your skin. His blood was so hot at first, but it's rapidly cooling already.
You know he was never really here, for his eyes always sought for something that was beyond the realms of heaven.
One day you will taste that sake for yourself, so you can tell him that you have. Because somehow you know you will see him again.
