Title: Older Ghosts
Author: Kubaru Suki
Prompt: #7, Ghosts
Time: 16:16

Author's Note: Yeah. I don't know what's up with it either. In my own defense, I've been writing JE boyband fic while I've been gone. I think that counts for something.

Older Ghosts

So there's a guy lying in the road, Gojyo thinks. With his guts hanging out like streamers at a party or something, Gojyo thinks. Like, Gojyo thinks, you could seriously string up that guy's intestines and hang lanterns on 'em, there is that much of him hanging out. Nice smile, though, Gojyo thinks.

So what else can he do but bring him home and stuff everything back in and sew him up again? Sew him up again and watch over him. Him. Mr. Nice Smile with the ripped-out eye and the torn-open gut and the wrecked-up life somewhere behind him. Yeah, Gojyo thinks, what else do you do?

Well, Gojyo thinks, you wait for him to wake up, obviously. And he does, obviously. And you make friends because he's leaving, Gojyo thinks. But it's all right that he's leaving, Gojyo thinks, because at least he's not springing it on you out of nowhere. No sneak-attacks from behind, no walking out the front door on an ordinary (okay, used to be ordinary) day without a word.

That deserves something in return, Gojyo thinks. Some gesture, something meaningful. Like the chance to actually get out, Gojyo thinks. And he does, you know. Get out, that is. Good for him, Gojyo thinks. Only…only somebody has to make sure he gets there or what's the point of getting out at all, Gojyo thinks. So what can you do but go after a guy, Gojyo thinks. What else can you do?

What else can he do but hurt when he loses him all the same? Cho Gonou who was as ripped up inside and outside as Gojyo was once. And he bothered to say goodbye, Gojyo thinks. That deserves something, Gojyo thinks. Some gesture, something meaningful.

So maybe it's stupid but it's something, Gojyo thinks. And when Cho Hakkai-the guy Cho Gonou heals up into-turns up, maybe it's stupid to keep him, Gojyo thinks. Only…only not. It's not like he hasn't done this before, Gojyo thinks. Dad and Mom and Jien and now this guy.

So he looks at him. Watches him. Walks on eggshells around him, maybe. I've got older ghosts than you, Gojyo thinks. Older ghosts, Gojyo thinks, but you're the first one I wanted.

Ghosts of the Past, Ghosts of the Future

He's noticed them before. Fourteen big guys in leather; what's not to notice? Plus, Gojyo developed a fine survival instinct. There isn't much that happens around him that he isn't aware of on some level.

So he's notice them before. Fourteen big guys in leather blowing through town a couple of times a year. They're not particularly big guys-though the leather probably helps that impression along a lot. From the way hold themselves, the way that they move, the way they talk, it's obvious that they're soldiers of some sort. They're always polite, though, never rowdy even though they're young. Most people in town give them a wide berth, though, so Gojyo doesn't bother. Well shit, he thinks, it's obvious they're not gonna cause trouble. They probably help old ladies across the street without even making a crack about it. That, and they're always tired when Gojyo sees them-something in their purposeful, even steps always suggesting that they're dead on their feet from a long day of hard work-as they stumble into Gojyo's favorite bar.

Gojyo buys them a round of beers on nights when the tables have been good to him. And on the nights when it hasn't been so good. They're nice kids, these soldiers. He likes them for some dumb reason. It could be the way that they act when they join him. Which they do, sometimes. Then they get a little rowdy, watching him gamble with the eager, excited air that he himself used to have when watching Jien play cards. He can't figure out why the hell they're so happy about spending time with him but hell, it's a nice change for once.

He sort of misses them when they leave. All of them tossing him a wave and a 'bye, General'. He's not sure where OR why they came up with that nickname but, again, hell it is a nice change.

When he acquires Hakkai, Gojyo tells him about his soldiers. 'First Squadron' is all he knows about where they're from, he confides one night, over a late night poker game and beer in their tiny kitchen. Good guys. Not pissy like Sanzo. It makes Hakkai laugh and, when the squad comes to town a few months later, he is grinning when he sees them.

First Squadron, Gojyo discovers, is thrilled to meet Hakkai. They immediately christen him 'Field Marshal' and they buy the beer that night. After that, a few times a year, it's back to Gojyo (and now Hakkai, too) buying beers. When they leave for India, Gojyo leaves a note at the bar for the soldiers. Since he doesn't know when they (them OR him and Hakkai) will be back around (or if, but Gojyo likes to think positive) he doesn’t bother to leave it with the barkeeper. He carves 'India or Bust' on his usual table and leaves the next day.

It's nearly a year after they get home before First Squadron tumbles in to town again and something twigs in Gojyo's head. "You were there," he says, looking at their captain. "You helped out at the Castle." There had been evidence at the time that something had breached the castle defenses, had helped clear a path and then the round room where all the reinforcements had been funneled, preventing any attacks from behind. Gojyo hadn't given it much thought at the time but now he's standing here, it's blindingly obvious that somehow these guys gave them a save.

From the way Hakkai is grinning, it's blindingly obvious that he had figured that out much earlier.

"I was wondering," says Hakkai, "if you wouldn't mind having a meal with us. My treat."

"Mine too," Gojyo cuts in. "There's a good yakiniku place not far from here. Great sake. So grab your asses and move your gear."

He can't help but grin at the way First Squadron snaps to attention, saluting both himself and Hakkai. "Sir, yes, sir!"

I'm not particularly happy with either of these, but I really needed to write something today and I loved the prompt. I'm just braindead.
