I think a lot of what Sanzo says and does with Goku is a reflection of what happened to him. With a...Sanzo twist. (Don't get too attached to me, damned if I'm going to be mushy, etc.)

I think you're absolutely correct that Sanzo's own childhood experiences formed a lot of what he does with Goku. For that matter, his experiences with Koumyou are really the only model he's had for affection of any kind, really. (Although I was just re-reading his Burial Arc, and there's a certain level of affection he's getting from Jikaku as well. But that was such a brief relationship ... .)

Yeah, I think there were probably a few monks here and there-- Jikaku, Shuuei-- but they were few enough to be remarkable. For the most part it was jealousy and bullshit. Koumyou really was the deciding factor.

Sanzo's a really interesting experiment in nature vs. nurture, isn't he? Koumyou clearly had a lot of influence on him, but he's not really like Koumyou at all.

(Re young Xien: oh, definitely! I have a feeling Sanzo may subtly arrange for that young man to have some constructive but humiliating extra duties somewhere around the Temple for the next few days ... .)
