Finally it's November. September and October are always pretty lame months, but by November I'm cool with the fact it's not summer anymore. Also, Thanksgiving gets my vote for best holiday ever.
Unfortunately I have the Pope's load of homework to do for this week. Though it could be worse, once Tuesday is done I have nothing huge until next Wednesday. I'm doing better in school this year than I have ever in college so far. I might actually have straight A's, and if not, I'm pretty damn close. It feels pretty good.
The band came down this weekend to play 2 shows. Needless to say, it kicked massive amounts of ass. The Thursday show was outside at 10:00 at night. The 2 students running the soundboard were given a 10 minute crash course and told to man the entire show, so I felt really bad for them with our Baroque number of instruments.
Let's count.
1. Chris - 2 acoustic guitars, electric guitar, electric bass
2. Jeremy - mandolin, fiddle
3. Sam - fiddle
4. Nathaniel - fiddle, bouzouki
5. Me - 2 keyboards
6. My friend Josh - bagpipes and bodhran
Not to mention 4 vocal microphones. Even a professional would cringe after seeing our 11 instruments between the 5 of us. Do I even have to tell you that the sound was shitty? Regardless, all the friends who came out enjoyed themselves.
Still, I was in really bad shape after the show. I was really irritable and had to take a long breather off by myself.
But Friday was the shit. Friday was the show we (and Goucher) were waiting for. We wore our Halloween costumes (we were the Village People)
Sam (construction worker) and Jeremy (soldier)
Me (cowboy)
Nathaniel (Indian chief) and Chris (biker)
And Elliot was the cop, but there aren't any good pics of him up on facebook yet.
We showed up an hour and a half early and did the soundboard ourselves. Because fuck sound people, they are lazy and unmotivated and even when you have a good level they fuck around and make bands sound like shit. I hate sound people.
The show was cooking (both in temperament and in temperature) and we had a flipping awesome time. And there were Irish car bombs afterwards.
Having Sam Swan replacing Nathan for this year is a pretty odd feeling, but it's kind of cool too. Sam is an incredible musician and he learned ALL of our songs in 2 practices. And not to sound cocky or anything, but we throw a lot of weird kinks in our music on purpose and he NAILED every single one.
At one point in the night all 5 of us Bridgebuilders, even Sam, had a group huddle, and we said that at the count of 3, we would all say at the same time what would have made this show better. And we all said "Nathan" at the exact same time. It was a very tender moment.
Now all I want to do is play shows. We have like 6 new songs in the works, including a ballad by Chris and Nathaniel, a space epic by me, and 2 dirty instrumental tune sets. We definitely plan on recording a 2nd CD in maybe a year or a year and a half. I'm looking forward to seeing the direction we go in, and to see how Nathan interprets our newer stuff. Because while he never sits down and writes songs like me and Nathaniel and Chris do, his additions are what really make me like the songs a lot.
