“Your eyes look sad.” He was aware that it was an unusual way to break the silence, but then again, he had always had this tendency of saying whatever came to his mind.
“That’s a first,” she laughed, turning his back on him to look through the window of her cottage. “I’ve been told many things but that.”
“It’s a pity that such beautiful eyes always look melancholic,” he insisted on the subject, watching the sun on her hair, making him wonder if it still was as silky as it looked.
“Does sadness make them less beautiful?” she asked, standing confident as if she felt comfortable in her own skin.
“Sadness and beauty shouldn’t go together.”
“Says who?” And there it was, the defiance that had made her fearsome before many men. Whether her soul was fragile or not, clearly she was strong enough to uphold and fight for what she believed. He admired that.
“It’s because you haven’t forgotten him yet?” He hadn’t even mentioned the other’s name and she had already changed her posture, her hand unconsciously taking the shape of a claw, ready to attack.
“That’s none of your business.”
“You are right.”
“Your eyes don’t look too happy either,” she restarted the conversation after a long period of uncomfortable silence. “After all these years...” her voice trailed off as she came closer.
“I can’t forget that I believed in a lie for thirteen years,” he frowned, looking away.
“So neither of us can’t forget,” she sympathized, removing her mask to let him see she was smiling.
“Will you try to kill me now?” he asked amused, staring into her eyes. Always beautiful regardless of looking liquid and at the verge of tears, or bright as if they could mirror the stars.
“Of course not.”
“But you won’t love me either.” He let her look into him as well before reaching the door.
“I could,” she offered, her voice deep but lacking the certainty that set her apart from the rest.
“Not true,” he walked away, his voice too soft to sound like a reproach.
