This year we've seen a lower than normal box office with the movies that were released. Sure, "Batman Begins", "War of the Worlds", "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" & "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" were all very good, but being the huge fan of the horror genre that I am, I am really upset with the recent releases in that genre this year. I mean "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" was pretty good, but it could've been a hell of a lot better with an "R" rating. Other films such as "Cry_Wolf", "Venom" and "The Skeleton Key" all made me feel a bit empty when I left the theater. I think the reason a lot of these did so bad was mainly do to the rating: PG-13 rated horror. Come on Hollywood, you can't slap a PG-13 rating onto a horror film & expect it to do huge. Horror films were never meant to be made for kids. That is why we have Disney making all those computer-animated cartoons, so that kids can have fims to watch while mommy & daddy & big brother & big sister go see a film that will scare the hell out of them.
The one thing that makes me feel good about the next batch of horror films on the horizon this year, is that they are being made by people who know horror & want only the people who love horror to see them. Such films include the remake of John Carpenter's "The Fog", the sequel to my favorite horror film in recent memory "Saw II", the movie adaptation of my favorite video game "Doom" and even news that a new "Hannibal Lecter" novel & movie is on the way. The book will be titled "Behind the Mask" and will tell the story of Hannibal through three stages of his life, showing us what made him become the icon he is today. The movie has a temporary title of "Behind the Mask: Young Hannibal" and will start shooting at the end of this year. I have no idea if it will be realesed next year, but the book will be out November of this year. Also, a prequel to the 2003 remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" will be out in time for Halloween next year, so I think that real horror movies will be on the rise & we won't have to worry about those stupid PG-13 rating being attached to them.
