Spirit
Although his home was now in Greece, he still came now and then to keep an eye on things and make sure everything was in order. He had spent many years in this place, but it didn’t feel familiar anymore. He didn’t remember the mountains to be so silent, the animals so shy.
But as the young man worked methodically, from one room to the next, he realized it couldn’t be otherwise. “Him” wasn’t here, and somehow the mountains and the animals knew he wasn’t coming back. The air was so still that it was impossible to shake the feeling that they all blamed him that the master was gone. He worked a little bit faster.
As always, he had left the tomb for last. Hardly a tomb, really, since there was no body under the heavy polished rock that bore the name and symbol of the gentle man who had earned the love of every living thing in this deserted place. But where else would his spirit find peace? No, even if the body wasn’t buried here, the essence of the man he had respected and loved still lived in this place, more than anywhere else. He dusted off the gray surface, not in the least surprised that the weather that quickly did away with everything else hadn’t marred the words on the rock.
Mu of Aries, brave Saint of Athena and beloved master. May he rest in peace.
