Signs
Looking back, there had been signs.
He had refused to see them, or maybe he really had been oblivious to them: to the swelling of the moon that marked his birthright, to the twinkling of the two starts that sealed his duties since birth.
But the future had rushed in, filling his present and stretching as back as his past. Now that he had this responsibility, this love that demanded so much of him, in his hands, he could simply not imagine a world in which things would have been otherwise.
He knew he was very young, and he was aware of the worried looks of the elders around him, when he first received that which would become the centerpiece of his life for years to come. But the sun peeked through the clouds and a golden reflection jumped from in between his arms.
Little Aioria quickly fell asleep, his yellowish curls still catching the sunlight.
Yes, there had been signs to tell of his mother’s pregnancy. Her white body, blooming to resemble the moon in the sky, her black eyes, glistening with the expectancy of the life to come. And he had missed them. But that didn’t matter anymore. His baby brother was here and now Aioros would never have to worry about missing signals any more. The most important thing of his life had already happened.
