As you probably know, Oliver Twist has now been made into a movie, and is about to come out (is it already out?). It is the first American film made in a long time by director Roman Polanski, the director of Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, whose wife, Sharon Tate, was among the victims of Charles Manson's gang.. I imagine several of you (the various girls that read my LJ) are planning to go see it. Please don't.
Shortly after the 1974 release of Chinatown, Polanski was charged with the statutory rape of a thirteen year old girl he had drugged and brought to Jack Nicholson's mansion (Nicholson knew nothing about it and was not home at the time). After he was convicted, Polanski fled to France to avoid prison, where the French, who apparently lived up to the stereotype of being amoral dogs, failed to capture him and turn him over to the American government. Now it seems he is back and making movies here again.
Please, do not support a convicted sex criminal who got away with his rime just because he is rich and famous. He fled custody to Europe so he would not have to pay for his crime, and the ridiculously liberal Hollywood seems to have forgiven him. I say, do not forgive him. He is a disguting individual and I would not give a cent to him by watching his movies. Please, do not go see Oliver Twist. It's the principle. Polanski is scum, and we should not support his work.
