The Hamster Is Awake!

I know very little about cars. Strike that. I know pratically nothing about cars. I know that if you push one pedal, you go forward. If you press the other, you don't. Throw a third pedal into the mix and I'm completely lost. I can take apart a computer but it took me over an hour to get my bonnet up when my car started making funny noises. When asked by the mechanic what sized engine I drive so he could look up the model on his computer, my response was a blank look. "It's blue? And shiny?" (Well, it's got metallic paint, at least - shiny might be overstating it given that I can't remember the last time I washed it.)

So, you'd hardly expect my response to the question: "What is your favourite show on TV?"

I am an addict of Top Gear.

My housemate got me started. It didn't take much - one episode and I was devouring as many as I could get my pretty paws on. I loved the camera-work: it's beautifully shot, showcasing beautifully designed cars in some amazing places. It's humourous: just watch that episode when they try to make hybrid car-boats. Or the one when they burn down the car wash. Or when they play conkers with caravans. Or, for that manner, any single episode.

The thing that I love the most about the show is the mixture of the presenters. Jeremy Clarkson, with his acerbic wit and extreme political incorrectness. James May who secretly wishes that we were back in the 1800s. (Ah, the good old days!) And of course, with his brilliant white teeth and 'lanky' frame, the hamster.

Last week, however, the hamster was in a terrible accident. He was doing 310 mph at the time and ended up with his helmet embedded in the ground. No one is sure what happened, but the doctors reported that he had brain damaged. And I felt more shocked then when I heard that Steve Irwin had died. Not the Hamster!

However, at last, there is better news (imparted to the world by the ever amusing Jeremy Clarkson). He is awake! Let the world rejoice!
