Anne Rice 2, Electric Boogaloo!

Annie Proulx joins the community of writers who don't like fanfiction of her works by slamming Brokeback Mountain fanfic. Apparently, she's been sent fix-the-ending-of-the-story fics (by mostly straight male writers, according to her) and she thinks they're missing the point of her story. You know, if what she's saying is accurate and she's been flooded with people saying "You wrote your story wrong and I fixed it," I wouldn't feel too kindly about fanfic, either. To be honest, this says as much about the entitlement issues of certain fans as it does about the author.

She has a point. Sending any author a fanfic that "fixes the ending" is a dick move. Taking it out on all fanfic writers who are only writing for their enjoyment is lame, though.

Just to clarify... She was sent fix-the-ending stories by the people who wrote the stories, who also told her "my ending is better than yours" or something along those lines? I can see why she'd get defensive over that.

On the other hand, as a published writer, you have to expect some flack from readers. She should, as a professional, just let that sort of thing roll right off her back. Getting pissy in return just makes her look childish.

While I agree the "fix the ending" stories is just idiotic on the part of the fanficcers (because heaven forbid a character die, oh gnoes! I think it takes a lot of guts to kill off a main character, but that's just my opinion.) I can understand why she would be pissed.

However, stories will be written whether she wants them to or not, and that's the bottom line. Yes, it is copyright infringement, but if I was an author I would be thankful and proud to have fics written about my works (as long as credit is properly given, of course. :P)

(And yeah, I thought the icon was appropriate. :P)
