It's time to weep for humanity again - thanks, Snapedom T_T

So, I've been sick this week (hence chapter 2 of my fic still not being posted yet, as I've been all feverish and didn't get it done)...and tonight I felt well enough to check my inbox and what do I see, first thing? A BIG STEAMING PILE OF RAGE INDUCING MISOGYNISTIC RACEFAIL FROM SNAPEDOM! I am thoroughly disgusted with these people.

The following quotes in italics are from mary_j_59 at the Snapedom post linked above:

...Lily, like Hermione, is a bright and talented Muggleborn, and a lot of people have attacked us here because they identify with her and consider Severus a lifelong racist.

Hey, braintrust, a lot of people have called you (and the other Snapedom Snapefen) out on your misogynistic and racist bullshit because it is misogynistic and racist bullshit. You can try and make yourself feel better by blaming people's objections on their *supposed* character love/character hate, but even if everyone who ever objected to your wank identified with Lily and considered Snape a lifelong racist, that wouldn't make your ignorant and obtuse fail any less that.

Your batshit arguments are torn apart at the HMS_STFU here and by ravenstar84 here, and by randomneses here. [ETA: Your offensive batshit is now being ripped a new one on Unfunny Fandom here, too.] Similar arguments to the one's expressed in the Snapedom topic thread in question have also been exposed for the massive pile of unfunny fail that they are, in previous posts at various sites and during debate on Snapedom itself. That you fail to listen to reason and look beyond your own privilege and see how offensive and stupid you are being, is on you.

I am starting to wonder why bright young women of color would identify with Lily. After all, her situation is not at all like theirs. They may well suffer low-level prejudice everywhere they go. Anyone can tell, by looking at another person, whether they are primarily of European, Asian, or African descent. And far too many people make judgements about others based on their ancestry. I can completely understand why these fans get outraged by young Sev's yelling "Mudblood" if they equate it with the "n" word.

First of all, I have to wonder why you are making a point to complain specifically about WOC identifying with Lily. You are calling WOC out on identifying with Lily and wagging your finger and it's coming off to me as a condescending privileged asshat complaining about WOC being uppity for daring to identify with a fictional character and daring to complain when that character is bashed with misogynist and racist arguments. It's bad enough when you talk about fictional characters in this way, but when you start condescending to real life people about the prejudice they experience in real life, it only adds credence to the suspicion that you say misogynist and racist things about fictional characters in HP because you hold similar opinions about real people in real life.

Also, trying to guess someone's descent by looking at them is not as reliable as you think and once a group has been Othered in some way, the culture doing the Othering will come up with some superficial stereotypes to ascribe to that group so that they can try and spot the Others (regardless of the fact that these superficial features are not universal). For instance, although I have no Jewish heritage (that I know of), I have had people make that assumption that I am Jewish because I looked and/or sounded Jewish to them. Other times, even though I have no Indian heritage (that I know of), I have had people make the assumption that I'm Indian because I have a "foreign looking name" and looked Indian to them (it's the hair, I've been told - I didn't ask, they just offered up this opinion). And since I've been going to a lot of new doctors lately, and been giving my "foreign looking name" along with apparently looking ambiguous as to my descent, I have been getting asked a lot lately "what are you? where do you come from? Are you from [insert country name here]? etc." (I'm not kidding - someone actually asked me "what are you?" recently). You wanna know what my ancestry is? It's overwhelmingly white German and English (with some Native American far back on both sides, according to family legend). Those who decide to make a point of guessing my descent, have yet to guess right. So, NO, NOT "anyone can tell, by looking at another person, whether they are primarily of European, Asian, or African descent" or people wouldn't, for instance, guess Indian (Southern Asian) for me. I am living proof that "anyone can tell" is bullshit.

Also, the books come right out and say that wizards have assigned some superficial stereotypes to Muggles and Muggle-borns and that some prejudiced wizards make assumptions based off those in determining who is a Muggle/Muggle-born by sight.

From GoF:
"Language, Weasley," said Malfoy, his pale eyes glittering. "Hadn't you better be hurrying along, now? You wouldn't like her spotted, would you?"

He nodded at Hermione, and at the same moment, a blast like a bomb sounded from the campsite, and a flash of green light momentarily lit the trees around them.

"What's that supposed to mean?" said Hermione defiantly.

"Granger, they're after Muggles, "said Malfoy. "D'you want to be showing off your knickers in midair? Because if you do, hang around. . . they're moving this way, and it would give us all a laugh."

"Hermione's a witch," Harry snarled.

"Have it your own way, Potter," said Malfoy, grinning maliciously. "If you think they can't spot a Mudblood, stay where you are."

Read the damn books, Snapefen! And having some fucking reading comprehension while you're at it.

So I really, really, don't see why those young women identify with her so strongly, while failing to identify with Sev or any other character with Muggle (not Muggleborn) descent.

AHHHH, THE STUPID, IT BURNS! Muggle-borns have the most Muggle descent a wizard or witch can have! Muggle-borns are called Muggle-borns because both parents are Muggles and they have all Muggle descent! What fucking books were you reading?! Lily doesn't have Muggle-born descent, she has Muggle descent, which is why she is termed a Muggle-born. A character that has Muggle-born descent would be Dumbledore (and many wizards wouldn't term it that way - they'd say DD has Muggle descent, because Muggle-borns aren't considered real witches by some - they are considered to be Muggle thieves of magic and/or freaks of nature).

And I haven't even gotten to the what-the-fuckery of her failing to see how Snape might not be the most identifiable character for those who have experienced racial prejudice in their lives, seeing as he hurled a racial slur at his best friend (and apparently used it other times too, from what is said by Lily) and joined a genocidal terrorist group (whether Snape knew genocide was on the table or not, he definitely knew that they were racist as hell and trying to take over the wizarding world by force). While Snape did surely face prejudice for being a half-blood with a Muggle parent, it wouldn't have been as much as Lily faced for being Muggle-born, and Snape's reaction to the prejudice in the world was to join in with the racists and play that game for what benefits he could reap - until it got the person he loved marked for death and killed. Then he learned his lesson. I love Snape, he's my favorite, but HE NEEDED REDEMPTION FOR A REASON, SNAPEFEN!

Don't even get me started on totalreadr here or Lynn here.

Grrrrr! >_<

*cleansing breath*
