They sat on the roof for a long time. Jim cried until he passed out from weariness. Batman shifted slightly, easing himself into a siting position onthe rooftop with Jim still held against him. At some point, Batman had eased a glove off and had began to run his hand over Jim's hair gently, trying to provide some comfort. The sky was beginning to turn red in the east. Batman knew that soon he would have to go home, Bruce Wayne had appointments. He was loath to leave Gordon alone. He had watched as the firefighters had put the fire at MCU out. Then he watched as they began to bring the body bags out. The dawn was bringing a new day. Batman was not sure Jim Gordon would be able to face what the day brought, alone.
Abruptly, Batman made a decision. Gordon was going to learn the truth of Batman, and Bruce could only hope that it would never put Gordon in a position that would hurt the Commisoner. He keyed his mic in the mask.
"Alfred."
"Sir? Is all well? You should be home now. It is getting light."
"I'm coming in, Alfred. We're coming in. I have Gordon with me."
"Master Bruce?"
His voice sounding tired, he explained. "It's been a long night, Alfred. MCU is gone. So is Jim Gordon's house. And his family, too. He's here with me. I...he's asleep now. I'm bringing him to the penthouse. If we lose him, we lose Gotham."
"Very well, sir."
Batman had been staring out at the dawn while he had talked to Alfred. He looked down to see Gordon bleary looking up at him.
"Now you know." He said in his normal voice matter of factly. "Unfortunately, I may have a meeting that Bruce Wayne can't avoid. But I want you were I know you are safe. I can't hide you away like I did Rachel that night, but I intend to stay near you for the day."
"I need to find them" Jim said, levering himself up. "If you can help me, I'll go with you. If not..." he trailed off as he stood.
"I will. We will find out who is behind this. I will do what ever you need me to do. But first, I need to get out of here. Batman is still a wanted man, and we don't need Police Commisoner Gordon being seen with him." Bruce stood and pushed a button on his belt. In the alley below, the rumble of an engine starting could be heard. "Come on. "
He walked to the edge of the building, and turned to see Gordon kneeling down where the framed pictures of his kids were laying. Jim reached down and brushed his fingers over each of the pictures. Then he took the pictures from the envelope and put them back inside it. Picking it all up, he blindly stumbled to Bruce standing at the edge.
"Trust me," Bruce said softly.
Okay, shorter chapter, but I plan to post more tonight. Gotta take care of mundane things first. Like diapers and bottles.
