Police Commisoner James Gordon sat on his backstep holding a bottle in a brown paper bag. Night had long fallen, his shift had ended 3 hours ago. Plenty of time to come home, find the emply apartment and go to the nearest store for something to cope. Besides his personal effects, four things had sat on the kitchen counter. Two were this year's school pictures of the kids, freshly framed. Beside them was a manila envelope with Barbara's wedding band sitting on top. Jim had stared at the small collection of things that were left of his marriage and then slipped his ring off and sat it next to hers.
Now, he sat on the backstep trying to make sense of it all. He hadn't opened the envelope yet. He knew he should, in hopes that it would say where they were, and when he'd get to see the kids again, but he couldn't. It would be real then. In another moment he told himself. Maybe two. About then, his cell rang.
"Gordon." He listened to the voice on the other end. Closed his eyes tiredly. "I'll be there in twenty minutes." He got up and headed into his empty house. He needed a cold shower before dealing with the latest problems Gotham's underbelly was spewing at him. Unfortunately he hadn't drank enough to tell MCU that he was incapacitated.
He grabbed the envelope as he headed out the door, then went back in and got the pictures for his desk. Now that they were gone, he didn't think he'd be here much. When the lease ended, he would move someplace else. Without the memories.
Thirty minutes later found Gordon standing in front of the Gotham Major Crimes Unit building staring in disbelief. Fire trucks and their crews ran busily around trying to stop the raging fire. It had to be arson or a bomb, Jim thought. He stopped the Fire Chief as she went by him. "Jess, how long ago did this start?"
"It was called in about seven minutes ago, Commish."
She started to walk away, and then stopped to listen to as her radio crackled to life. Jess was close enough for Gordon to here it.
"Second fire, 2254 43rd Ave. Any available units please respond."
Gordon froze. "Jess, that's my place."
"Sir? Your family?"
"Tell them no one is there. Barbara and the kids... we've seperated. They moved out of Gotham. I'm going to my office at city hall. Keep me posted."
Jim turned and walked away. City hall was two blocks away, if he cut through the back alleys. He realized that he was clutching the kid's pictures and that envelope in his hands. He paused and then realized that it would be impossible to get to his car. As soon as he was completely in the shadows of the alley, he knew he wasn't alone.
"Gordon." The deep gravelly voice sounded out.
"Batman." Jim relaxed.
"Do you trust me?" Batman came close enough for Jim to make out.
"Yes." Jim didn't hesitate. In that second, he realized that he truely did. He had never seen the man's face, but it didn't matter. With his family gone, and the knowledge that his own officers couldn't be trusted, there was no one else.
Batman stepped closer, wrapping an arm around Jim as he fired a grappling gun up into the night sky. A moment later had them on top of a roof across from the MCU building.
"Where were you heading?" Batman asked.
"City Hall. But, I realized right before you spoke down there that it wasn't such a good idea. About 30 minutes ago, I got a call that I was needed at MCU. I told them I'd be there in 20 minutes. The fire chief told me the fire was called in about 5 minutes after I would have been there. Luckily I..." Jim paused. He had turned away from the seen below, where MCU still burned, towards the direction of his home. His eyes found the glow where it was. Suddenly it was too real. His family had left. His house and MCU were burning. Someone was targeting him. His knees buckled and he was dimly aware of Batman saying his name as he fell onto them.
"Jim?" Batman asked again. He was kneeling next to Gordon, supporting him. Keeping him upright.
"That..."Jim gestured vaguely towards the second glow, "my house. They called it in right before I decided to head towards city hall."
"Your family?" The growl asked.
Jim shook his head. "They left Gotham." Suddenly he was tearing at the envelope. "They were there this morning, and tonight I came home, they were gone, empty house, oh God! NO!" He dropped the papers, staring blindly out at the city. Tears poured down his face. Batman reached down and picked up the papers. He looked at the top one, a picture. It showed Barbara and the children laying in a grassy area. Their throats had been cut. The second page was a copy of the first, with the picture defaced and the words "HA, HA" written across it in red.
Batman dropped them and pulled Gordon against him. The commisoner had no way of knowing, but both ot them were crying.
Author's Note: Please review. I haven't written anything in about 5 years. Also, this will be a friendship fic, not a slash. Atleast for now. If anyone has any suggestions for the storyline, please send them. I just sat down at the keyboard, and wondered what would happen in Nolanverse if the following senario played out. "With Harvey Dent dead and Batman declared a wanted man, what would happen if Jim Gordon then lost everything important to him?" So I decided to take everything except Batman away without hurting Gordon physically and see what happens.
