Ellipses abuse. I'm sorry. :C
EDIT: Hideous errors now fixed!
She tried so many times to get him to relax, but no matter how she went about it, he was still so ill at ease. To be fair, things had gotten better, but at the worst of times, Chrona curled up in the corner and Maka wondered how terrible a life you'd need to have to feel that was the only place you were safe: closed in on two sides.
When she opened the door, she did so by a crack and squeezed herself through the space so she wouldn't crush Mr. Corner's favorite inhabitant.
"Here again, Chrona?" she asked gently, crouching before the ball in the corner. Chrona nodded into his knees. "Why don't you come with us to the mall tomorrow? We're going with everyone else. It will be fun."
"I- I could go out there, but they might be there and he might come out and then he..." Chrona made sort of a quiet frustrated noise, wishing the sentence were more coherent, but it was really the best he could do right now. 'Everyone' included Ragnarok's latest victims of sexual harassment. "They're mad at me."
"They aren't mad, I promise," Maka said, sitting down on the floor. It was possible she'd be there awhile if she had any intention of making Chrona leave the room in the morning. "Liz and Patty have put up with a lot worse than Ragnarok."
Speak of the devil.
"Shut up, bitch! The hell you know about me, anyway?" The black form rose up from Chrona's shoulder blades, flapping its puny arms in an attempt to look intimidating. "I could take you. I could take on Shinigami's punk!!"
"R-Ragnarok..."
"But those chicks had pretty nice racks. Why don't you grow a pair, huh?"
Maka was tempted to make a nice dent in Ragnarok's head with the spine of her book for that remark, but she knew it was likely Chrona would be used as a meat shield.
"They're not mad," Maka assured again, ignoring the obnoxious weapon. He shouted some protests at being ignored and finally decided to give up for the time being. "They know it's not you, Chrona."
Chrona finally withdrew his face from his knees, watching Maka's expression for any indication that she was lying to make him feel better. "But if I come, Ragnarok will come with me."
"That's okay." She smiled, rising to half-height and offering a gloved hand to Chrona. "Time to get out of that corner, wouldn't you say?"
Finding that there was no reasonable means of escape left, Chrona very tentatively reached a hand up to Maka's and allowed himself to be hauled to his feet. They stood like that for a few seconds, hands still attached, before Chrona jerked his hand away like he'd been hit with ten thousand volts of electricity. His eyes immediately connected with the floor and he grabbed for his arm, face reddening.
"I- I um... s-sorry. I didn't um--" It wasn't supposed to be this hard to make decent sentences. They always made more sense in his head... or... at least, usually.
All of a sudden, there was another hand on his arm besides his own and Maka was looking up into his face, smiling slightly, head tilted. "I'm your friend. You don't have to be scared to touch me."
She made it sound so easy, like reaching out to hold her was so doable. Medusa had never touched him in his entire life that he could remember, but Maka was always smiling and saying things were okay and that she was his friend. It made Chrona want to try and reach out to her like she had done for him, but if Maka ever cried, she probably had Soul anyway.
"One step at a time, though," Maka told herself, pulling Chrona from his thoughts. "You'll get there eventually." She patted Chrona's arm lightly and moved for the door. "We'll see you in the morning, right?"
"Y-yeah..."
"G'night then."
She moved for the door and before Chrona could think about it, he grabbed her hand again. Green eyes gave him an inquisitive look and Chrona felt like his heart had just liquefied. He needed to drop off the face of the earth right now before she changed her mind about being touched and got mad and maybe never wanted to talk to him again.
"S-s-s-sorry!!! I'm sorry!!" The hold on her hand slackened and he pulled away, but already he had caught her attention and successfully made all the blood in his body rush to his face. Maka was already looking at him and there was no way to retract it.
"Was there something else?"
She sounded totally normal.
Why? Wasn't she supposed to be angry or something? Wasn't she supposed to look at him funny? Somehow this made everything immensely more terrifying and a reasonable sentence answer wasn't even starting to form in his head. If he would find some real words right now, he would ask her to stay a little bit longer, even so he could just look at her and know she was a friend and she wasn't going to throw him into a dark closet somewhere.
She put her arms around him. Chrona twitched again, half from nervous energy and half from being unused to it. Maka's head pressed gently against his chest.
"M-Maka?"
"You need a hug," she told him, considering how she could manage to hurt Ragnarok alone if he decided to intervene. Chrona didn't say anything else, but she could feel him very subtly trembling under her touch. He was otherwise stone-still.
"I don't know how to deal with... with this." And he didn't; not any better than the first time she had done it.
"It's okay. Everything is okay."
Hands shaking, he put arms around her, too, fingers closing around the black fabric of her coat, loose enough that if she changed her mind and wanted to run away right now, she could. Now Maka could feel the gently quivering presence of Chrona's soul right next to hers, completely unshielded. Chrona was trying very hard not to put up a guard against her.
"If you don't know how to deal with things, we'll teach you."
"Y-yeah... but is... um, is it okay if... if we stay here for a little bit?"
"As long as you want."
He smiled shyly, though she couldn't see.
