"At what point is it no longer possible to fix political problems from within the system. What would you do in such a situation?"

"And how would you convince someone very stubborn that your home is no longer safe and you must leave, when they seem determined to stay no matter the consequences?"

"Keep telling it to them. Threaten to leave, if they don't follow know that you have to either stay with them and fight for your freedom or leave them behind with a way out," Carth said, frowning slightly. Then he grimaced. "Sorry, I stay away from politics. I wouldn't know what to do outside the military."

Kalinka nods. "I have been doing so, but we must be gone by morning. Papa does not like the idea of leaving the Citadel, but we can not defend it. My brothers would not stand a chance against the Maverick Hunters. I will make sure he has a PINPoint with him, and he knows the coordinates of where we will have to go. I hope he will see reason. There is just no other choice if we are to survive."

She smiles at the rest and nods. "I wish I could do so also, but when the situation involves my family I must pay attention to it."

He nodded, then frowned thoughtfully. "Do you have anybody who can help you, or are you on your own?"

"Yes. Blues' brothers will help us. They already live here in the Nexus, and have for some time. I think this may be one of the reasons Papa is not happy about this. He still does not trust them because of old problems. But whether he likes it or not, we are all on the same side now."

"Sometimes, trying to get someone to leave won't work. I'd be happier if someone was here with me but, unfortunately, since she's a soldier, her loyalty to the military and commanding officer has to come first." Ed shrugs.

Kalinka nods. "I am sorry to hear that you have to be apart from your friend because of this."

"This is not the same. Papa does not want to leave the Citadel, but the government has demanded to examine all of the robots there. We can not allow this. Some of them are illegal and have been for a very long time. If the government were to find this out, they would be destroyed. And it is also likely we would be arrested."

"My brothers and the others that live with us will not be able to defend the Citadel if the Maverick Hunters are sent against us. There is no choice but to evacuate to the Nexus, where we can not be found. Or if we were we could not be attacked because of the field."

Ed winces. "Any particular reason they're illegal? And last I checked, people here tend to frown on people trying to drag others back to their own realities against their will."

"They do not have the coding that would force them to obey orders from humans."

"If your government is so corrupt to the core," this is coming from a young man who can't be much older then Kalinka herself, who is parked on one of the many couches fiddling with something in his hands. "And, like you've said they're to corrupt to fix from the inside then... Remake it from scratch."

He has no answer for the second question.

"That is far more easily said than done."

"So is some hopeful desire to try and make a change with ineffectual words, Miss...?" The young man smiles at her now.

"Words are not always ineffective. Just ask anyone who has ever been the target of malicious gossip." Kalinka smiles back. "But there comes a time when words are not enough."

"Cossack. Kalinka Cossack."

There's only one answer. Rebellion.

"That is a word that has... unpleasant associations in my world."

"But you may be right."
