"We made them this morning," Tavi adds with a nod.
"Strawberries are very good," Mistral says.
"Mr. 33 says we've had a lot of strawberries this year," comments Lono.

Out comes two boxes of crayons, two pads of drawing paper, a blank journal a leather cover, a notepad full of recipes she's copied down for them, and a bag of marbles.

"What do you want?" a hatchling says, willing to let her pick whatever she wants off the cart in trade.

"I don't really have a favorite kind of berry. I'm not that picky about them."
He considers the jars of jam for a moment or two before digging around in a bag of things he acquired in the shopping trip he was heading home from.
"Think this would be enough for a jar or two of jam?" he asks, offering a standard shrink-wrapped package of 250 sheets of paper.

She looks familiar to them, but so far none of them have quite placed why. A few of the hatchlings stare at her shadow, curious.
"Strawberries are good," Lono says. "Mr. 33 says we've had a lot of strawberries this year. More than last year."

Her shadow moves almost like water as she moves, but less physical, rippling around her feet.

"I help with the garden sometimes. I like the garden," says Lono.
"And I take care of the chickens," Mistral adds.
Teo and Tavi, curious, try to poke at the moving shadow.
