There's a rather rigid and obviously pissed off Spiderman in the Nexus, and he hangs upside down before asking a question.

"Is revenge out of the question for us hero-types?"

"And, one thing that you could never forgive someone for if they did it?"

"If you want to be upheld as a perfect and unblemished paragon of blind justice, then yes, revenge is out of the question. But if you're comfortable with your image being more mortal and flawed, then you may be able to forgive yourself for what you want to do.

"I think," she continues quietly, curling up on one of the couches, "that the most important questions you can ask yourself is whether you'll be able to forgive yourself, and whether there's any chance of relying on the law to give you peace."

He sighs. "S'not like I have the best image in my world. But come to think of it, the problem isn't in my world."

"The law? Well, the boys in blue are pretty good when it's comes to the normal crime. But I don't really think they'll be able to help much with my problem. Could I forgive myself, though? ..Dunno. Maybe, maybe not."

"I suggest you figure that out before you go any further. Revenge can wait."

"I've been uh, un-forgiving myself for years. Why should I start now?"

Revenge is meaningless, hero or villian.

You can forgive anything if you understand enough.

"Well I never said there's a meaning. It'd make me feel better, though."

"Well hell, maybe you'd like to help me understand why a former Gargoyle bitch, turned human bitch, hunted down my girlfriend, and tortured her? Hmm?"

Would it make you feel better?

First you have to understand yourself and know why you wouldn't do the same. And not for abstract ideas like good and evil. Why did one of my very good friends kill me? I still meet with him for drinks here in the Nexus, since I can't in our world.

"Probably."

"I already know why I wouldn't do shit like that."

Not at all. I can think of several "hero-types" that have pursued vengeance.

Blatant stupidity.

"Well, that's good to know."

"Well, that's pretty high on the list, yeah."

Your revenge, do you have it planned, yet?

"Unfortunately... Yes," Elisa says, quietly. She's got the look of one rather defeated herself right now. "Everything that witch has done and now this... She deserves every kind of hell you can imagine."

"Yes? Well, maybe in my world vengeance would be a no no. But in yours? Heh. All bets are off."

"I'd be happy to supply it."

"You don't think I haven't felt the same way, Ben?" Elisa asks. "Especially now? I'd like nothing better than to just rip her lungs out. But what's that gonna do?"

"Get rid of her, I thought that was pretty obvious."

Depends. If you ken be qvick and efficient and make the vorld really safer by it, I vould think even a Strong Moral Upbringing might not get in teh vay. But if you'z just going to get lost in madness and shouting about how the bastards vill 'never hurt anyvun you love ever again,' and you'z going to try to do that by getting yourself killed? Then that'z vhen ther hero-type's hero-types friends and everyvun else vhat cares about them need to stop them.

Vhat people does and doesn't get forgiven for iz Miss Clay's call. Vhen she'z thinking close to straight. But treason vould be vun.

"So revenge is okay in moderation, yeah?"

"Treason. Well, I can live with that. Don't like it, but yeah."

Yah. Killing a bunch of stupid villagers vhat stuck you on gallows for a couple of days iz, apparently, too unethical -- I didn't, by the vay; I ken follow instructions. And vun young lady taking on whole army iz too shtupid. But finding a shmart vay to take down vun person vhat really gots it coming iz just right!

Vhat ken't you live vith?
