Think about it. Columbo's wandering around the wreckage in his trenchcoat, brow furrowed in his cranky old man way, a stogie firmly between his index and middle finger. He pokes at something with his boot, and gestures with the stogie across the fuselage. "What's that part over there?" he says to the tall, skinny man beside him, and puffs on the cigar.
"That part of the airplane is called the tail fin, which provides directional stability while the plane is in flight." The scientist readjusts his bowtie and bounces a bit in place, eager to have his expertise called on. "Usually it suppresses the undesired pitching motions that occur; however, this one looks like it was damaged."
"I see, I see," the detective replies, rubbing his chin with the hand not holding the cigar. "And ah, why do you think that someone would do that? Moreover, how would that damamged fin thing get past the hangar? Wouldn't someone've noticed it?"
